Benny's Story
Meet Benny!

This handsome fluffy dude somehow found himself at a high kill shelter in Houston, Texas. When volunteers met him and shared some ridiculously adorable pictures, we knew we had to save him. Thankfully, a foster family said yes, and we were able to get Benny out just moments before his deadline.

Now on to the best part: Benny himself!

Benny is approximately five years old and weighs around 60 pounds, although he’s still a skinny guy who could stand to pack on a few more pounds. We’re not entirely sure what breed he is, but our best guess is some sort of Rottweiler/Chow Chow mix. Whatever he is, the combo is adorable.

First things first, Benny LOVES humans. All humans. Men, women, kids, strangers, you name it. He’s currently fostered with a five-year-old whom he absolutely adores, and he’s met people of all ages with nothing but love to give.

Personal space? Benny has never heard of it.

This is the kind of dog who will stand approximately two inches from you with his adorable little perky smile, patiently waiting for you to acknowledge his existence. Going to the bathroom alone? Those days are over. Working from home? Congratulations, you’ve just hired yourself a very fluffy, slightly needy assistant who works exclusively for pets.

Benny is what we’d consider a lower-energy guy. He’s past the puppy nonsense and has entered his professional lounging era. He loves curling up next to you while you work, relaxing on the couch, and generally just being wherever his favorite humans are. Don’t get us wrong, he still enjoys adventures and walks, but he’s equally happy doing absolutely nothing as long as you’re doing it together.

Speaking of walks, Benny is fantastic on a leash! He has very little prey drive and is incredibly responsive to verbal corrections. Even when a squirrel catches his attention, a simple “Benny, no” is usually enough to get him right back to business. He’s a smart boy who knows sit, down, and, most importantly, how to make himself comfortable.

He’s also doing wonderfully with potty training and has been a respectful houseguest.

Now, let’s talk about his roommates.

Benny has been fostered with several different dogs and generally does well with everyone. The problem? Other dogs don’t always appreciate Benny quite as much as Benny appreciates himself.

You see, Mr. Casanova has one rather unfortunate habit. When he gets overstimulated or anxious, he sometimes decides that humping another dog is the appropriate way to handle his feelings. Spoiler alert: the other dogs disagree.

Benny can also be a bit pushy, especially with more submissive dogs. He isn’t looking for a fight, but he doesn’t always understand when he’s being annoying. Because of this, we’d love to see him either as an only dog or with a confident, well-matched canine sibling who has appropriate boundaries. His future family will need to be willing to redirect this behavior and help him continue learning his manners.

Cats, on the other hand? Benny does great! He’s been fostered with cats and has shown himself to be very manageable around them. He occasionally gets curious and follows them around, but he’s easily redirected and listens well.

One of Benny’s funniest little quirks is his Rottie rumble. When he’s feeling extra comfortable and soaking up all the lovies, he’ll sometimes make this deep, grumbly noise that sounds suspiciously like a growl. But don’t worry, in these moments it’s just Benny’s way of expressing his happiness. It’s one of those endearing little things that makes him uniquely Benny.

There is one thing Benny would like to formally request from his future family: please, for the love of all things fluffy, no kennel.

Benny is not a fan of being crated and will cry to let you know just how strongly he feels about it. The good news? When left loose in the house, he’s been a perfect gentleman. He doesn’t destroy things or get into trouble. He just finds himself a comfortable spot and relaxes until his people return.

Benny would love a home with a backyard, although he’d much rather have you outside enjoying it with him than be left to entertain himself. He’s not an independent, go-do-your-own-thing kind of dog. He’s a devoted companion who genuinely wants to spend his days with his humans.

We think Benny would be especially happy with someone who works from home, is retired, or simply spends a good amount of time around the house. He could be a wonderful fit for an older couple looking for a laid-back companion or a family with children who wants a sweet, affectionate dog. He’s pretty flexible about the household itself. His biggest requirement is having people who want him around as much as he wants to be around them.

Benny is currently finishing up treatment for heartworm disease and is expected to be ready to travel to his forever family in mid-November.

He’s located in Houston, Texas, but is available for adoption throughout the country. His $600 adoption fee includes transportation to his forever home.

If you think Benny might be your guy, apply today!
https://www.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/DSTR/Dog
