BENJI's Story

Hi everyone out there! My name is Benji and here's more about me:

PHYSICAL INFO:

Breed: Brittany Griffon mix (best guess!)
Age: 1 year 1 month approx.
Gender: Male
Weight: 22lbs (10 kg)
Current Location: Guadalajara Mexico

RESCUE STORY - I was found in a pretty sad state on the streets of a small town in Michoacán, Mexico. My rescuer was notified and decided to come see what the situation was. Well it wasn't good! I was paralyzed and dragging my hind legs along the ground, so the skin on my legs was severely injured. The rescuer initially thought I had been hit by a car, but upon arriving in Guadalajara and getting some X-rays done, they discovered a bullet lodged in my spine...yikes. This caused me to lose mobility and sensation from the waist down. Even though the vet team started treating my legs as best as they could, there had been a lack of blood flow for too long and so both legs had to be amputated. I was an absolute CHAMP through all of this, complying without complaint! That's thanks to the strength of my little soul as, despite everything, my rescuer says I am an 'amazingly happy dog who truly embraces life'! Nowadays I'm doing much better - I've started physical therapy and it's recommended that I get a wheelchair as my front legs are taking on some extra strain. In the meantime, it's also been recommended I get some gentle, soothing massages (hey, I'm not complaining!). I don't need any medication at the moment, but the vet suggested considering joint supplements (chondroprotectants) in the future and continuing with physical therapy. I do wear a diaper for pee all day long (sometimes I don't use it when I'm out in the yard) and I have no control over my poops, which happen regualarly twice a day.

Nowadays I'm doing much better! I've started physical therapy and, thanks to some very generous supporters, I now have my very own wheelchair! And let me tell you... I am a NATURAL! I took to my wheels so quickly and absolutely love having the freedom to get around and explore. The wheelchair is especially helpful because my front legs take on some extra strain due to my missing hind legs, so having wheels helps take some of that pressure off while giving me more independence and mobility. In the meantime, I've also been enjoying some gentle, soothing massages (hey, I'm not complaining!). I don't need any medication at the moment, but the vet suggested considering joint supplements (chondroprotectants) in the future and continuing with physical therapy. I do wear a diaper for pee all day long (sometimes I don't use it when I'm out in the yard) and I have no control over my poops, which happen regularly twice a day. A HUGE thank you to everyone who helped me get my wheelchair!

TEMPERAMENT - Boy oh boy, there's not a lot I don't love (okay, besides cats)! I love car rides (woooo I love feeling the breeze in my face), toys (all toys, yep all toys), food (especially stealing food from other pups' bowls - this may need to be worked on heheh) and I'm always motivated by a happy voice and some love and attention! I love spending time in the yard and I am super social. Due to my condition, I am understandably a bit shy initially when I am meeting new hoomans. But in no time I blossom and show my true colours! With other pups I can be cautious (again - I don't have four legs to stand on!) so I do prefer the company of calm doggys. I am incredibly sweet, happy and playful and I genuinely love the company of hoomans and dog friends. Finally, you will find that I make the bestest snuggle buddy (well, almost - I'm currently learning 'manners' because when I get a bit too excited I can give soft, playful nips at your calves - buttttt we're working on that!!).

ENERGY LEVEL - Medium (I like to balance between play and naps)

GETS ALONG WITH:

Kids – Unknown.
Dogs – Yes! I have lived with dogs of all sizes. I do prefer calm dogs though and once I gain confidence I love to play a lot with other pups!
Cats – No thank you!

PREY DRIVE - Unknown. I'm not too sure how I'll react around squirrels/rabbits etc. My adopter needs to be prepared and willing to train me through these behaviours, should they arise.

TRAINING:

Leash skills – My rescuers say I am good with my leash skills however I may need some additional patience and training :)
House trained – I have no sphincter control and so I wear a diaper and poop regularly twice a day (in the morning and at around 3:00 PM)
Crate trained – My rescuer says this is in progress but I may need some additional training and patience.
Car rides – My rescuer says I love these but I may need some additional training and patience.

Please Note: WCP highly encourages adopters to do some research and training on their own before their dog arrives.

HEALTH NOTES:

My hind legs were amputated and I now have a wheelchair! I took to it like a natural and love having the freedom to get around
I wear a diaper for pee and have no control over my poops.
I am neutered and vaccinated.
NOTE: It is not uncommon for rescue dogs to require dental work/cleaning after they are adopted. West Coast Paws does not cover the costs of dental work and/or vet visits. These costs are the financial responsibility of the adopter.

ADOPTION FEE:

My adoption fee is $504.00 CAD including tax (5% GST, 7% PST), which includes my airfare, if a flight volunteer is found directly to Vancouver.

-------------------------------------

DISCLAIMER:

Please visit wcpdogrescue.com to read about West Coast Paws Dog Rescue and it's adoption process.

The info included in each WCP bio is provided to us from the international rescuer. West Coast Paws Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
WCP wholeheartedly believes in open communication with our adopters. We are always here to provide support and to join you in celebrating your dogs’ successes! Submit an Application - Start by clicking the “Adopt” button on a WCP dog’s profile. You will be redirected to an application form, which we ask you to fill out in as much detail as possible. Phone Interview - After your application is pre-screened, you will be contacted to arrange a Phone Interview. The purpose of the Phone Interview is to chat about the answers you provided on your application and to ask any clarifying questions. House Check - Once you have passed your Phone Interview, we will ask you to send us some photos of your home. Fear not, we don’t expect your house to look like a showhome! We are simply looking to see where your WCP pup would live and whether or not there are any potential safety hazards (escape areas etc.). Approval - Presuming you pass your House Check, you will receive an Adoption Approval email from our WCP Adoption Team. Deposit - A $100 CAD deposit is required in order for your dog to be reserved for you. Once we have received your deposit, we will update your dogs’ profile to show “Pending Adoption” and will stop accepting any further applications for him/her. At this point, we will notify the Rescuer that a home has been found and request that they start looking for a flight volunteer to bring your pup to Vancouver. Now you patiently wait for your dog to be booked on a flight. The Rescuer will work to find a traveller who is willing to add your dog as ‘extra luggage’ onto their ticket. We refer to these kind humans as “Flight Volunteers”. Meanwhile, your pup will be checked by a veterinarian who will issue a Certificate of Health and ensure your pup's shots are up to date. The vet will then approve the dog for travel and will provide all medical documentation, including your pup’s vaccination record. Flight Confirmation & Final Payment - Once the Rescuer finds a flight for your dog, WCP will send you an email with your pup’s flight information. We will also send you specific instructions regarding airport pickup such as where you need to park, what time you need to be there, and what you need to bring with you. Don’t worry, we will tell you everything you need to know! We require you to sign an Adoption Contract before you pick up your dog. Pickup & Take Your Pup Home - Your pup’s “gotcha” day is finally here! You will pick your dog up at the airport and take him/her home with you. Follow-Up & Post Adoption Support - Your WCP adoption experience doesn’t end the moment you take your dog home. We believe in providing ample post-adoption support and want to be a part of your dog’s journey. Within 7 days of taking your dog home, you can expect a phone call from our Follow-Up Team. If you need any help or support, WCP is here for you and your pup! WCP wholeheartedly believes in open communication with our adopters. We are always here to provide support and to join you in celebrating your dogs’ successes! There is no expiration date on our post-adoption support.
