Picked up as a stray when he was still just a very young puppy, Basham spent two long years at a municipal shelter in Texas waiting for his forever family. That family never came.

With better hopes of adoption in Canada, 2-year-old Basham made the long journey to our shelter and was transferred into our care in mid-August. We are only posting him now (3 months since his arrival) because we felt he needed time to adjust.

For a sensitive dog like Basham, spending so much time in a shelter environment, without daily one-on-one attention and care, did not help build his confidence. Timid and insecure, it takes time for him to trust and feel safe around people.

Basham’s adopter must understand that he is anxious and fearful so it will take time and patience to build his trust. He will need to adapt to his new person, his new environment and his new life in a loving forever home at his own pace. Basham is a sweet dog who deserves a chance to find peace and comfort in a loving home where he can settle in and know he is there to stay.

We can tell you that if you put in the time, once you build a bond with Basham, he will be your loyal and trusted companion and eagerly seek your attention and affection. He will follow you everywhere in hopes of getting a belly rub (which he loves!) scratches behind his ears and if he is lucky, a treat or two.

Basham gets along extremely well with other dogs, both big and small. He is playful and snuggly and he is not possessive of his food or toys. We feel he will do very well and integrate faster if he can share his new home with another friendly and well-balanced dog. Basham is not, however, good with cats.

Basham will do best in a calm and quiet home where he will not be left alone for long periods on a regular basis. He needs an experienced adopter who he can rely on to help him build his confidence and trust. A household with a lot of activity might be too much for him.

Because he is anxious and insecure, Basham is a flight risk so his adopter must be extremely vigilant, especially in the first few months following his transition to his new home. In the beginning, even in a securely fenced yard, he should be kept on a leash and accompanied. He enjoys his walks but for his safety, his leash must be attached to a no-slip martingale collar, a harness is not a safe option.
Basham is a good dog who had a rough start and he is struggling to find peace in this world.

Recueilli dans la rue alors qu’il était un tout jeune chiot, Basham a passé deux longues années dans un refuge municipal du Texas à attendre sa famille pour la vie. Mais aucune famille ne l’a choisi.

Ses chances d’être adopté étant meilleures au Canada, Basham, maintenant âgé de deux ans, a fait un long voyage jusqu’à nous; il a été confié à notre refuge à la mi-août. Basham est un chien sensible; en raison de la très longue période passée dans un refuge sans accompagnement individuel et bienveillant quotidien, il n’a pas pu bâtir sa confiance. Il est donc timide et anxieux et a besoin de temps pour apprendre à faire confiance et à se sentir à l’aise auprès des gens.

La personne qui adoptera Basham devra comprendre qu’il est anxieux et craintif, et qu’il lui faudra du temps et de la patience pour bâtir sa confiance. Basham devra s’habituer à son nouveau compagnon humain, à son nouvel environnement et à sa nouvelle vie dans un foyer permanent, à son propre rythme. Basham est un chien gentil qui mérite une chance de trouver la paix et le confort dans un foyer aimant, où il pourra s’installer et comprendre qu’il est enfin chez lui.

Nous pouvons vous assurer que, si vous prenez le temps de développer un lien avec Basham, il deviendra un compagnon loyal et fidèle; il cherchera votre attention et votre affection. Il vous suivra partout dans l’espoir de recevoir des caresses sur le ventre (qu’il adore), des grattouilles derrière les oreilles et, avec un peu de chance, une ou deux gâteries.

Basham s’entend extrêmement bien avec les autres chiens, qu’ils soient gros ou petits. Il est joueur et câlin, et ne se montre pas possessif de sa nourriture ou de ses jouets. À notre avis, il serait tout à fait à son aise et s’adapterait plus vite s’il partageait son nouveau foyer avec un chien équilibré et amical. Cependant, Basham ne peut pas cohabiter avec des chats.

Le foyer idéal pour Basham sera calme et paisible, et il ne sera pas laissé seul régulièrement pendant de longues périodes. Il a besoin d’un adoptant expérimenté qui pourra l’aider à bâtir sa confiance en lui et envers les autres. Un foyer très actif pourrait être angoissant pour lui.

Comme il est anxieux et qu’il manque d’assurance, Basham pourrait tenter de s’enfuir. Son adoptant devra donc être extrêmement vigilant, particulièrement au cours des premiers mois de la transition vers son nouveau foyer. Au début, même dans une cour clôturée sécuritaire, il devrait être accompagné et tenu en laisse. Il aime faire des promenades, mais pour sa sécurité, sa laisse doit être attachée à un collier martingale; le harnais n’est pas assez sûr.

Basham est un bon chien, qui a connu des débuts difficiles. Il a du mal à se sentir en paix.
