Bartholemew's Story
Bartholomew came from a hoarding situation and dogs and puppies got out of hand for the owner. Provincial Animal Welfare ordered dogs to be surrendered to rescue|shelter and via another rescue, Bartholomew joined Mattie's Place along with 3 of his puppies; Captain, Sailor and Calypso. Mom & the remaining littermates stayed with the other rescue.

Bartholomew is a young dog, About 1 year old. He weighs around 25 pounds. He'll go in for his neuter mid April prior to adoption and he'll be completely up to date, medically.

Bartholomew was the very best Dad to his puppies. Carrying them around. Cuddling with them. Protective and defensive if anyone tried to get near to them. Obsessed, actually. Unusual to see with a male canine.

He's settling into his foster home and the puppies are in their own separate foster home.

It's clear that Bartholomew lacked a lot of socialization and he's a very nervous and unsure dog in new situations and with new people. He is in foster care with a Mom & Dad and 2 teen kids and has mostly attached himself to his foster Mom, where his obsession begins again, and he really wants to be with her 24/7.

Bartholomew is exhibiting some separation anxiety from his foster Mom. He will cry and bark, even when others are home, if she leaves the house. We're hoping as he settles in more, this anxiety will be reduced and if not, I will look at adding some medication to help him process his thinking patterns better and reduce his anxiety. This won't be a lifetime medication. Just a for now medication.

Bartholomew will do best with an adult only or older teen home. I just think kid vibes will make him too nervous. Can he be around kids? Sure. Should he live with them? I don't believe so. An adopter willing to commit to professional training as he will need to catch up on what he missed as a puppy in his most informative months. That said, he's still a young dog and I'm confident he can play catch up and get back on track.

He is not cat tested, but I think he'd be fine with a dog savvy cat.

Bartholomew will do best in a home with a secured backyard, so he isn't overstimulated with having to navigate elevators | hallways | stairs | street walks.

He initially really struggled trusting the resident dog in foster care, but he's since realized his Aussie friend can be a bestie and they are really enjoying one another. I think Bartholomew would benefit from having a patient resident dog in the home to help him learn how to "dog" best.

Bartholomew is a bit of a project dog, but he is a really great dog and is most deserving of a home to call his own.

He will need regular grooming, so be sure you have that in your budget when considering adoption. I'll have him groomed prior to being adopted so he had time to decompress post adoption before being put through a professional groom.

FROM THE FOSTER:

Bartholomew (Bart to us) is a very sweet, snuggly and playful little guy. He loves to cuddle beside us when we are sitting down and is right at our feet when we are up and moving. Each day that passes brings out a more relaxed, curious dog.

Bart is wary of new people and it takes him a long time to get comfortable when new people are in the house. He seems happiest when his space is quiet, but is learning to manage when company comes over. He barks if people move too quickly or if he did not realize someone was there, but will settle quickly, finding his spot in the room where he can see all the goings-on. He has shown he can be won over by a kind voice, tasty treats, and patience from the humans around him. The more time that passes, the more relaxed Bart seems.

He loves to play with our Australian Shepherd, both inside and outside. He likes to chase, wrestle and tug, as a result the two dogs have become quick pals and spend a lot of time together. While he loves being with our dog, Bart is also quite comfortable being without his furry friend. If there is someone to snuggle with him, he is happy.

Bart sleeps well through the night, comfortable in his crate that is beside our bed. He can easily go 8-10 hours overnight without any issues. He is happy and bouncy in the morning and ready to start a new day.

We are working on Bart being more comfortable home alone, without any of his humans. Weāve just started with short outings (a walk to the mailbox) as his anxiety seems to rise when I leave the house. He seems better in a closed off area than in his crate.

He has not shown any food or toy aggression towards people. He grazes when he can and seems hungrier in the evening, but with encouragement will eat most of his breakfast, as well. He loves chewing on his bully stick.

Bartholomew is a snuggly, dedicated and curious boy whose confidence continues to grow. Everyday he brings us all many smiles and giggles.

----------------------------------------

$875 ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES: spay/neuter, deworming, flea/tick prevention, vaccinations, dentals if needed or any added surgical needed surgical care, food, nose to tail health exam, toys, leash|collar, winter coat (seasonal), poop bags, dishes and 30 days of Trupanion pet insurance with immediate coverage on adoption day for any illness or injury not pre-existing.

----------------------------------------

To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in it's current & previous setting.
