Barnaby's Story

Meet Barnaby!

Barnaby is an 8- to 9-year-old Beagle weighing 25 pounds, and this sweet boy has come a long way from the day he was found wandering as a stray. He had obviously been on his own for quite some time and looked like the poster child for a humane society commercial. He needed help, and he needed it badly.

For the first two weeks in rescue, Barnaby's schedule was pretty simple: eat, sleep, repeat. His little body needed time to recover. It was clear that people hadn't always been kind to him. Whenever someone reached toward him, he would cringe and squeeze his eyes shut, bracing himself instead of expecting a gentle touch.

During his medical evaluation, Barnaby had a full blood panel and was treated for Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease. He also had a perianal gland adenoma removed from his rump. The pathology report confirmed it was benign, and excision was curative. Barnaby does have a grade 4 heart murmur. His heart isn't causing him problems right now, but he may need medication as he gets older. His adopter should be prepared for regular veterinary monitoring and any future treatment his heart may need.

Barnaby is now a different dog! These days, he seeks out attention because he's discovered that human hands can deliver some pretty wonderful things, including pets, affection, and scratches in all the right places. Watching him learn to trust is a reminder of just how much a little kindness can change a life.

Barnaby absolutely loves other dogs. He enjoys playing with his canine friends and is perfectly happy cuddling up beside one for a nap. Having another friendly dog around seems to make him feel right at home.

For a Beagle, Barnaby is surprisingly quiet. He generally saves his voice for important announcements, such as when his dog buddies are barking or when his foster mom is taking entirely too long to fill his food bowl. Apparently, dinner delays are a serious matter.

Barnaby enjoys car rides and what we like to call sniffaries, where he can investigate all the fascinating smells the world has to offer. He tosses toys around and enjoys a good game of tug. At bedtime, he settles into his own dog bed, content to call it a day.

A physically fenced yard is required for Barnaby. He's a Beagle, after all, and those noses have a way of finding interesting smells that can make the rest of the world temporarily disappear! A secure yard will let him safely explore, sniff, and enjoy the outdoors.

Barnaby doesn't need someone to teach him how to be a perfect dog. He needs someone willing to give him time, patience, and the security of knowing he is finally home. A canine companion would be a lovely bonus.

After spending so much time simply surviving, Barnaby is finally getting the chance to enjoy being a dog. He deserves a home where gentle hands, full food bowls, cozy beds, and sniffaries are just part of everyday life.

If you have room in your heart for a sweet, easygoing Beagle who's ready for a fresh start, Barnaby would love to meet you.

Barnaby is housetrained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested and microchipped.

Apply to meet Barnaby at www.furfunrescue.org

If you have questions, you can email rox@furfunrescue.org or call 319-929-6657.

Adopters must be within a two-hour drive of Cedar Rapids, IA.

Barnaby is looking for an indoor home.

Adoption fee $300.

Our dogs are all in foster homes. We require a completed application prior to meeting one of our dogs. The adoption application is on our website: furfunrescue.org. Once the application is received, we check the veterinarian reference if you have or have had pets. Then we contact you to set up a time to meet the dog. If, after meeting the dog you want to proceed with an adoption, we will run a background check, call personal references, and do a home visit. We always introduce our dog to any current pets. The final step is completing the adoption contract.
