Bambi-PUPPYMILL RESCUE's Story

Meet Bambi! This shy Cairn Terrier was purchased as an adult from an Amish puppy mill in PA… it seems they have realized people are willing to buy adult dogs and not just puppies and of course they will do anything to profit off of dogs with no care for what happens to them. She was purchased expecting a sweet calm lapdog and family pet. But after life in a cage being used for breeding she has no clue how to be one and was probably more miserable in a home with no other dogs than she was in the mill where at least she had her canine companions to comfort her. Like most mill rescues, she has no clue how to walk on a leash or enjoy life in a real home, and is very skittish and distrustful of people though never aggressive.

She’s curious and will wag her tail and give a quick hand lick maybe following the other dogs’ greeting, but otherwise tries to avoid and stay out of reach. She allows all handling and petting once “caught” but isn’t at the point of enjoying it yet. Maybe one day, on her own timetable, but probably not 3 days, 3 weeks, or even 3 months. When she’s with a “pack” of doggie friends she looks like a normal happy little terrier from a distance- tail up and wagging, exploring the yard, greeting every new dog- zero fear of other dogs. She even has a little bit of a typical cairn boss-bitch streak and can hold her own and put the bratty young ones in their place if they mess with her and needs to be fed separately. She has been following the other dogs outside into a fenced yard and going to the bathroom but will have accidents, and gets very anxious in a crate or being separated from other dogs for even a few minutes. Bambi is looking for a patient adult home with at least one other compatible dog companion to learn from and follow, and someone who won’t get their feelings hurt and that there is no instant connection with people.

She’s about 6-8 years old and finally getting spayed this week to make sure her breeding days are behind her, and a dental so will be medically ready for the right home very soon.
Email njwoof@cs.com to meet Bambi in Northern NJ

Since COVID-19, we are no longer holding our Sunday adoption events until further notice, but we are scheduling meet and greet appointments with a specific dog or dogs at our meeting spots in Northern NJ. To streamline adoptions, all communication before, during, and after the adoption process is done through email only: we have limited volunteers able to return phone calls. Submit an application from our website www.secondchance.petfinder.com to speed up the adoption process and email any questions to us at njwoof@cs.com. Please check your email regularly for next steps. All our dogs reside in foster care in Northern NJ until adoption and we do not have a central shelter location. We are a small all-volunteer organization focused on rescuing local dogs from area shelters, as well as accepting some surrenders and puppy mill rescues.

Second Chance Pet Adoption League's Adoption Policy
*Due to COVID-19 our adoption events are cancelled until further notice* Please email njwoof@cs.com and submit an application to set up an appointment to meet one of our adoptable dogs! Thank you for looking to open your home to a needy dog during this difficult time * Since most of our dogs live in foster homes instead of kennels, we get to know their personalities pretty well and have an idea of the type of home that would be ideal for them. We do our best to match you with a pet who will work out in your household, which is why we ask you to fill out the application below. It gives us information about your lifestyle and what you are looking for in a dog so we can find a match. Though we hope every adoption will be a success, we realize that sometimes once the pet gets into a home problems could arise and you may realize this is not the right dog for you. We always take our animals back at any time in their lifetime if they do not work out. We do not want them passed around or ending up in other shelters. If you are unable to keep your adopted pet, we require that they be returned to us so they can return to the foster home to which they have become accustomed. All of our dogs have been altered and given their vaccinations by our veterinarians as well as other necessary medical attention. Our adoption fees vary, generally up to $350 depending on the animal's breed, age, health, adoptability, and how much we have had to spend on them medically. All adoption fees are considered donations and go directly toward the medical care of our pets. Donations will be greatly appreciated as all our funding comes from our adoption fees, donations, and small fundraisers. All donations go directly toward medical care and supplies for our animals and are tax-deductible (we are a 501(c)(3) non-profit). We can always use volunteers to help with fostering mainly, and sometimes fundraising, supply collection and transport. Email us to volunteer njwoof@cs.com
