Baka's Story

Meet Baka
Breed: Great Dane
D.O.B: May 2025
Sex: Female/Spayed
Location: Rochester
Available for adoption after June 8th

Baka Needs:
• A family willing to give her at least 14 days to learn their routine and settle in

• A fenced-in yard
• Continuation of her anxiety medication
• A family willing to continue helping her feel safe in her crate
• A patient family that will continue helping her build confidence and will not give up on her

Baka is a 1-year-old Great Dane with a heart as big as her paws. Despite being the size of a small horse, she is still very much a puppy and comes with all the goofy, lovable, and sometimes mischievous tendencies that go along with it.

Baka loves spending time with her people and firmly believes she belongs on the couch with her giant head resting in your lap. She enjoys running around in a fenced yard, playing with sticks, and soaking up attention from the people she trusts.

One thing you'll quickly learn about Baka is that she's a smart girl. She has figured out how to open lever-style door handles, and at her foster home she often lets herself outside when she wants to enjoy the yard. Her foster family jokes that she comes with her own built-in door service.

Baka was rescued from a puppy mill and did not have a normal start to life. For the first several months of her life, she missed out on many of the experiences that help puppies develop confidence and learn how to be part of a family. Since coming into foster care, she has made tremendous progress learning to trust people, follow a routine, and understand that the world is not such a scary place.

To help with her anxiety, Baka takes medication twice daily, and it has made a huge difference in her confidence and overall quality of life. She will need to remain on this medication after adoption. Her foster family adjusts the timing of her medication when they know they will be leaving the house, giving it to her about an hour before departure so it has time to take effect. With this routine, Baka does very well when home alone and is learning that being by herself is nothing to worry about.

Baka is making amazing progress with crate training and knows the command "Kennel Up." Her foster family crates her when they leave the house, and she has come a long way in learning that her crate is a safe place. They are also working on having her sleep in her crate at night so she continues building positive associations with it, even when everyone is home.

She is good with other dogs, but she would likely thrive as the only dog in the home where she can receive all of the attention and continue building her confidence without competition from other pets. Her compatibility with cats is unknown. Due to her size and puppy enthusiasm, Baka would do best in a home without small children.

Because of her background, Baka's future family will need to be patient and give her time to adjust. She may need a few weeks to learn a new routine, understand expectations, and feel comfortable in a new environment. Once she settles in, however, she is an incredibly loving, loyal companion who wants nothing more than to be close to her people.

If you are interested in Baka please apply at https://www.716paws.org/adopt or message the rescue on Facebook, if you're already approved!
