Baguette's Story
Meet Baguette! This nibbly boy transferred to us from the San Diego Humane Society!
Baguette was found as a stray and taken to a local vet. He was picked up by Humane Law Enforcement not long after and taken to SDHS.
He had been there a month prior where he was secluded due to his kennel stress and was on anxiety medications. They were working to address his health concerns when we took over.
His previous owner must have left him outdoors as he had healing fly bites on his ears, corneal scarring on his left eye (small but permanent), healing scrapes on his lower back, and was underweight.
During his time with us we weaned him off his anxiety medications, his skin has improved, and he has gained weight. He has undergone a series of tests and trials since October 2025, but the blood in his stools remains and will just be a way of life for him.
Funky stool aside, Baguette has been an energetic busy bee with his friends, loves to nibble on the staff's fingers, and is such a ball of joy!

Health considerations: After 7 months of testing, Baguette's internist deemed he has non-clinical hematochezia. This means he still has consistent blood in his stools with an unknown cause. After spending over $12,000 we have run every diagnostic procedure & test available at both the general practice veterinarian AND the veterinary internal medicine specialist. Additionally, we have exhausted all other potential solutions such as diet changes, fiber supplementation, and steroid therapy.
The internist determined that his condition is not life limiting, though bloodwork should be done twice yearly to monitor his red blood cell count, electrolytes, kidney values, and check for anemia.
As with most French Bulldogs, they are known to be a cost intensive breed due to health issues during their lifetime. Please keep the reality of this in mind when considering Baguette or any dog of his breed.

Testing specifics: While we can have our general practice veterinarian and our veterinary internal medicine specialist forward paperwork to your vet for review, here is a basic look of the procedures conducted during Baguette's 7 months of testing:
-2 abdominal ultrasounds
- Basic to specialty blood & urine testing (to detect any of the following issues: disease screening, organ screening, hormonal imbalance, parasites, fungal, steroid levels, and more)
-Month long steroid therapy
-Diet changes (various protein types of regular, prescription, and specialty food)
-Colonoscopy (followed by a histopathology and FISH test)
Results found that Baguette's colon is normal, his stool culture is normal, he does not have cancer, he does not have ulcerative colitis, he has no infectious diseases (no GI disease), and he has no polyps or lesions.
He does have mild inflammation in his small intestine, but that is inconclusive. The result of all of the above has him listed as non-clinical hematochezia.

Regarding COVID-19 and other contagious illnesses: Please reschedule any visits if you are sick.
