Azúcar's Story

Even when you think you’re done, the universe has other plans. After New Year’s, on a drive up the mountain in Naguabo, we noticed a small white puppy with a red collar tied to a metal rail on the side of a very busy road. We kept driving, but our hearts stayed with her. On the way back down, we stopped—and realized she wasn’t alone. There were two puppies, abandoned right after the holidays, left to survive on a narrow mountain road where cars speed by and animals are often hit without a second thought.

With the help of friends and kind neighbors, they were fed and watched over, but it was clear they wouldn’t last long out there. They were desperate for human connection, chasing cars and approaching strangers, just wanting to be seen. Temporary shelter only worked for a short time—they kept escaping, drawn by people and love, putting themselves in danger again.

So we stepped in. These girls are now safe, cared for, and on their way to a better life. They’ve been dewormed, fully vaccinated (including rabies and Bordetella), quarantined, and microchipped. We estimate they’re about six months old and will be medium-sized dogs, around 25–30 pounds fully grown—still very much puppies at heart.

Latte, the brown girl (a black mouth cur mix), is a little shy at first. Give her 5–10 minutes and she melts into the sweetest, most loyal cuddle buddy you can imagine. Her sister, Sugar—Azúcar in Spanish—the white girl with brindle spots, is more outgoing and curious, always ready to make a new friend. Both are gentle, loving, and great with other animals. All they want is affection, playtime, and a place to finally feel safe.

They’re currently staying at my girlfriend’s home, waiting for their forever family—or a loving foster who can help them take the next step. We’re asking for a donation to help cover their spay surgeries before adoption, so these heaven-sent girls never have to repeat the cycle of abandonment. If you have room in your heart and home, Latte and Sugar are ready to give you a lifetime of love in return.
