Available - Dolly/Whitey's Story
Socialization: Dolly will need slow introductions to meeting new people, as she is a bit timid, but after a little bit she warms up to them and is very affectionate and loving. She is equally shy around men, women and children. She plays well with other dogs, is respectful and not overbearing with others and has become friends with all four of our dogs. We don't know how she interacts with cats.

Training: Dolly does know “sit” and will sit very nicely with our other pups while waiting her turn for an after-meal cookie. She does get very excited when we come home and tries to jump up but we are working on her sitting while being acknowledged. Usually, a quick correction of “Dolly – sit” will get her attention and she will stop. She is well-behaved in the house. We haven't had any instances of inappropriate chewing and she hasn't counter/table surfed since the first few weeks she was here. When we leave the house, she has not been crated, and she has been perfectly fine in the house. We also don't crate her at night. Her housetraining is going well. Most of the time she will not have any accidents in the house but we are vigilant about making sure she goes out in the morning and before bedtime, after meals and a couple times a day especially if it's raining out. We do have a doggie door so she can go out anytime she wants/needs to.

Crate trained: We do have a 42” crate for her use. She needs this size since she is very long-legged and smaller crates are too short for her. She will go into her crate when asked with the word “kennel”. We have been feeding her in her crate, so our other pups don't steal her food since she is a slow eater.

Leash trained: Dolly has not had a lot of leash training but is getting better. She pulls when she is on a lease and is very interested in what is going on around her – especially birds, bugs and small animals. We are working with her with a new harness and hope this will help her with her leash manners.

Activity level/requirements: Dolly is only 1 1/2 yo and is very active. We have a doggie door, out of which she can come and go anytime she wants and she spends a lot of time outside running our large, fenced yard, chasing birds, bugs and squirrels. Before coming to us, she was in a townhouse and showed high anxiety levels since she wasn't getting enough exercise. Since having this yard, she has shown no anxiety. Once she comes into the house, she settles pretty quickly and at night just crashes and sleeps soundly throughout the night. She is also very active with our four other dogs and plays with them both in the house and yard. Dolly needs a fenced yard in which she can run. She will not be happy with just being walked since she is so active.

Fence requirements: We have a large yard with a woven wire fence (wood enforced top and bottom) that is approximately 52” high. Dolly is very happy with this arrangement. She has never tried to challenge the fence, even when there is something interesting on the other side, although I believe she could make it over this height of fence if she wanted to. Her new home definitely needs a fenced yard that she can safely run off-leash.

Personality: Dolly is fun – very active – curious and eager to please. She has settled in nicely and quickly to our home and I think she would adapt quickly to a new home as long as she is mentally/physically active. She will not be happy with being crated all day. When outside, she loves to chase birds and squirrels and at night will chase bugs under the lights. She is also very affectionate and at night she wants to cuddle and be petted while we are watching TV or reading. During the day, she does like to know where her humans are but does not have to be beside them every moment. She does “paw” her human when she wants more petting or attention, but we are working on that. She has blended in nicely with our family and routine.

Health history: UTD on vaccinations, is spayed/neutered, microchipped, & on monthly heartworm preventative.

Foster comments: Dolly needs a home in which she can be active. Her humans don't necessarily need to be active – she just needs to be physically and mentally challenged with a yard in which to run and “things” to do like critters to chase, other dogs to play with and an abundance of toys/chew toys. As she gets better on a lead, she would like to go out and investigate the neighborhood and she enjoys car rides. She did come to us as a dog that was previously allowed on the furniture. This has not changed. She is very thin and we've done our best to put a little weight on her. She eats 3 times a day, full meals, and still has not gained but a couple of pounds. With her activity level so high, I believe she is burning it off. We also love her pink nose.

Foster Location: Cohoke, VA

Volunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $75.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.
