Ava's Story

Ava is an amazing dog who will absolutely thrive with a family of her own. She loves people and will plop herself right in your lap if you sit on the floor. If you're sitting on the couch she loves to sit right next to your legs and make sure she's within petting range. With such a sweet face and her gentle demeanor it's hard to say no when she asks for love!

She's also pretty low energy. She gets her daily zoomies and loves to run from the living room into the yard and do a quick loop in each area, then go back and do it again! She's content with those few minutes or running around and a walk around the neighborhood most days and will otherwise be relaxing on her bed, chewing on a bone, and occasionally de-stuffing a toy. She is still a little nervous on walks, so she'll go slow and doesn't pull, but we're working on building her confidence! When we've gone on car rides she settles down quickly and sleeps through it, even on 3+ hour rides.

She does really well with other dogs, she will try to engage in play but if the other dog isn't interested (like the older, grumpy dog she currently lives with!) she isn't pushy and moves on to cohabitating peacefully. She has a dopey and aloof attitude around other animals, she's curious but passive. She's even good with cats! When neighborhood cats are running along the fence in the yard she'll bark and chase them a little, but with housecats she's curious and even playful! She's interacted with a few different house cats and it's very similar to how she gets along with dogs, if they're interested in playing then she'll reciprocate but is otherwise respectful of their space.

While I haven't seen her with kids yet I just know she'd do amazing. She might be a little too much for little kids, because I think she might knock them down in her gentle quest to be their friend! But I just know she would love a couple human siblings to play and cuddle with as long as they wouldn't be knocked down when she came looking for love.

She isn't possessive of food, toys, or anything really. She'll let another dog push into her food bowl to try to steal a few bites and is more than happy to give up her toy or bone if another dog or a human takes it. She is a big fan of de-stuffing things, so she has a big folded blanket in her crate since she will definitely de-stuff a bed if left unattended.

She is great in the crate, she may whine a bit if she still hears you moving around but otherwise is happy to spend time in a big crate, especially if offered a bone or stuffed kong to keep her busy. She will even go lay in her crate to relax and will return to it as her safe space if she gets nervous (like when the vacuum monster makes an appearance!) Because she's so good in the crate she is almost completely potty trained now! The only times she has accidents is when it's raining outside, but if you go out with her or she has a covered area she'll do her business, she just won't take herself outside or wait by the door like she usually would.

She loves to spend time outside, I often will leave my back door open with a magnet screen that she will go in and out of at her leisure during the day. I think she was probably an outside dog at her first home, because she loves to spend time outside, but she has learned the joys of a comfy bed and spending time with her people inside!

Ava is an incredible dog, and I can't wait for her to find a home of her own! I think she'd fit right in with any lifestyle, though I don't know if she'd be a great apartment dog since she prefers to potty in a yard and not on the leash. But otherwise I can't picture a family or home she wouldn't thrive in!

Team Memphis Rescue & Support's Adoption Policy
Adoption Process The first step towards adopting a Team Memphis Rescue pup is completing the adoption application! The application gives us background information necessary to select the best fit family for each dog and vise versa. ! We take our job very seriously and want to do everything possible to ensure each and every dog will be with his adopted family for life. We suggest submitting an application describing the type of dog you are looking for even if you don’t see that particular dog on our adopt a pet page. Not every dog is posted. Also, there are hundreds of homeless dogs in this area so the pet you desire could possibly be found. We are all volunteers but try to process applications in 7 business days or less. You should receive a response that the application is being processed which means we are calling references, including the Veterinarian Clinic listed. Once your application is approved, a Team Memphis Representative will contact you for a brief phone interview, request a home inspection and set up date/time for a meet & greet. Adopters will also receive a call from the foster family if the pet is in a foster home. Foster families play a big part in a rescue dog's life. They provide valuable information to the adopter that helps the pet transition to a new home. If the pet appears to be the perfect fit, Team Memphis will provide a contract for signature and adopter pays the donation fee. Payments can be made through the PayPal, Venmo, checks or cash. Adoption fees are typically $300 and $200 for seniors (7 & up). The transport fee (approx $140/$150) for out of State adoptions is paid by the adopter after the reservation is made by Team Memphis Rescue. Team Memphis Adoption process: • You must be at least 21 years of age and be able to provide proof of age. • Any current pets must be spayed/neutered. They must also be up to date on annual exams, annual heartworm tests and annual vaccinations – along with consistent heartworm preventative. Exceptions to this will only be considered if proof of a medical explanation is provided. The same applies for your past pets. • If you currently rent, you must provide a landlord’s phone number and a copy of your executed lease. • All members of the family living in the home where the animal must agree on the adoption. • Home check will be required or video chat if out of state. • You must be able to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment and proper care for a pet. We are a volunteer based organization. We receive inquiries on dogs often and can not always respond. Please submit an adoption application if you are interested in one of our pets.
