Apple's Story

You may have heard of Apple. She became famous when she was found in a DC trash chute, after her prior owner apparently tried to throw her out. Apple was malnourished, anemic, covered with mats, and unable to use her hind legs. But Apple is a fighter, and she has not only survived, but thrived. She greets each new day with joy, excited to sniff around in the grass, lay on soft beds, and enjoy plenty of treats and maybe a pup cup.

Although Apple's back legs are of not much help in walking -- seemingly deformed since birth -- Apple can get around suprisingly quickly, mostly using her front legs and sheer determination. She does need to be carried up and down any stairs, but such diva treatment is only appropriate for such a media darling. She is very playful and loves toys. She approaches people eagerly, hoping for plenty of pets, and will let you know if you are shirking your responsibilities.

Apple screams when she is happy. She screams when you come home. She screams when dinner is served and, with equal conviction, when it is not. She screams because love, in her small and radiant body, simply does not fit quietly.
There is something almost operatic about it ~ this bright, unfiltered sound pouring out of a creature who weighs less than a bag of flour yet feels everything at cathedral volume.

Apple can co-exist comfortably, if not quietly, with dogs and cats. She is happy to accept pets from older children but is too fragile to be a good playmate for younglings. She is substantially housetrained, although it's worth having a potty pad available just in case. She's fine going for rides in the car or being left home on her own. She sleeps well through the night and is happy to wear her pajamas at bedtime.

Apple's ideal home will have a fenced yard, as she can't quite figure out how leash walks work. She wants plenty of snuggles and treats. She would be happy to be the only pet in the household, to maximize attention, or to have a small dog friend that she can play and nap with. Due to her talkative nature, she is not a good fit for an apartment or condo.

Apple is approx 7 years old and 9 lbs.
Fostered in Rockville, MD
Please apply at mirishaven.org
