AMANI 's Story

Amani was surrendered to the New York Animal Care Centers - the New York City municipal shelter when his owner's health declined.

This guys whole world was turned upside down.

The shelter is a very noisy, scary place and Amani was terrified. He was losing hope and then he was scheduled for euthanasia. A wonderful woman stepped up to save his life.

This is what she said about fostering Amani:

THESE ARE AMANI'S STATS:

Approximate age 4 years
Approximate weight 22 lb
Breed (s) Mixed we think he's definitely has Chihuahua in him
Spayed or neutered? Still learning. Uses pee pads and working on going outside.
Crate trained? Yes. Jumps into his crate at bed time and when eating a treat.
Paper trained? Yes.

Preferred forever home for your foster? One with another small confident dog his age, or no other dogs so he can be in the spotlight. He has not been exposed to children so I would say no young children under 8 years. He has not been exposed to cats so no cats at this time. Would do great in a house or apartment. Has shown some fearfulness with new people, but warms up quickly. Will take a very patient family who will continue to work on his potty training, his confidence and trust, and his manners.

Interesting quirks/behaviors: In his past life, Amani was never taken outside or went on a walk. In his foster home, he LOVES to go outside. He will jump at the door and sometimes scratch the door, so he will need patience and training on that. He loves to snuggle with his person on the couch, and will lay in your lap or lay his head on your shoulder while he lays on the back of the couch. He loves toys and is learning how to play with other dogs. There are 5 senior dogs in his foster home who are a little grumpy, so another young dog in the home would be great. He arrived very underweight, and has been putting on weight in his foster home, and loves treats. His love of treats helps with potty training. He is a barker, and will announce when someone is at the door, and will join in when the other dogs are barking.

Issues: Amani needs a very patient family who will continue to work on his potty training, but he is very smart and food motivated, and should adjust quickly. He would do best in a home that will give some gentle training on manners, like jumping, scratching on the door, and learning commands like sit and stay. Amani is also learning to trust, and can be fearful. Once he trusts you, he is a big lover. He will also need time to adjust to a new home, any new dogs, and learning a new routine.

Amani is a brave little soul who has been through a lot. He has been able to decompress in his foster home and his bright beautiful personality is starting to shine. When Amani feels safe and trusts you, he is a big love bug. He loves to snuggle, asks for hugs, takes treats gently, and will follow you from room to room. He is so curious about the outside world, and will be a great walking companion. He is energetic and bouncy, and barely stays still long enough to snap a photo! Amani has a soft and gentle way about him, but sometimes his nervousness gets the best of him. He will gain confidence and trust over time with a family that is gentle and patient with him. All he wants in life is to love and be loved.
