Alder's Story

Meet Alder! Alder is a little dog with a big personality and an even bigger desire to be loved. This sweet Shih Tzu mix came to Emerald City Pet Rescue from an emergency veterinary hospital in California, and he is now ready to find the person who will make him feel safe, loved, and never alone.

Once Alder knows you, he is all about his people. He shows his affection with kisses, excited little jumps, and plenty of requests for attention. Being close to his person is what makes him feel most secure, so he is looking for someone who wants a true companion by their side.

Alder has a playful, energetic personality and loves his toys. At 7 years old, he has plenty of pep in his step and would be a great match for someone who enjoys getting out and about with their dog. He has fairly good leash manners and prefers to do his business outside, although he will use his run overnight when needed. He also travels well once he settles in, although he may cry a little at first in the car.

Alder can be cautious when meeting new people, particularly men. He is generally comfortable with women, while men may need to give him some extra time and space to build trust. Once he knows you, he is affectionate and handles well. He is also still learning how to socialize with other dogs. A playful, patient dog may be a good match for him with the right introduction, while his comfort with cats is currently unknown.

Alder does have some separation anxiety. He may cry and bark when left alone, although he eventually settles down. Because he really does not want to be by himself, his ideal home would be with someone who can spend plenty of time with him and understands that building his confidence around alone time may take patience. He is also a flight risk, so a secure environment and careful management will be important.

Alder is one-eyed, but his eye is fully healed and he is doing well. He does have some skin sensitivity and can occasionally get itchy around his neck, which has improved with grooming and a short course of Apoquel. He is currently doing well without it. He eats a prescription Hill's Sensitive Stomach & Skin diet and will need regular grooming every 6–8 weeks, along with routine eye care, nail trims, and dental care. He would benefit from a professional dental cleaning in the near future.

Alder may take a little time to feel completely comfortable, but once he decides you're his person, you'll have a loving, playful little shadow who is very happy to be wherever you are.

If you're looking for a fun, affectionate companion who wants to be part of your everyday life, Alder may be your guy.

Alder is neutered, up to date on vaccines and microchipped.
