Ace's Story

Hello, my name is Ace!

I have been through a lot this last year. Not to dump on everyone, but Big Lake Humane Society is the THIRD shelter I have been in.
Why? Well, that's a fair question.
I'm going to be truthful with you about my past, because I want to show everyone how much I've changed and can continue to be the best dog I've ever been.

I was surrendered to the first shelter, because my person wanted a lower maintenance dog. I didn't like the groomer they took me too, and it kind of gave me PTSD about getting haircut. I really liked to be with them all the time, because I love being with people and that got stressful.
I got really overwhelmed and scared in the shelter because I was the only dog in a home and now there were like 125 dogs all in a room yelling at each other. So, I started yelling too, and hiding. I was really scared of the new people, and I'm sorry I acted so mean to them.

I got transferred to a different shelter, and let me tell, you I just COULD NOT get a handle on my stress. I would get overstimulated, and scared, and angry with people, and that's not like me. I would snap at them, and redirect my fear, and I'm so, so sorry I bit a couple legs when I got pushed too far.
It makes me sad, because I love people so much.

I started doing something new, I hyper fixated on toys. Balls, gosh, I love tennis balls. All day long, I could chew on a tennis ball. Then I started getting upset and mean about balls being taken away from me. I mean, would I ever get it back? I just wanted a ball. Just a ball to keep me company and call my own, that no one else would touch...

Anyways. The nice people there reach back out to the first shelter, because they knew I wasn't doing well. The first shelter suggested Big Lake Humane Society, and they took me in!

Their trainer figured out that as long as you keep the balls outside, and don't try and take them from me right away, AND have a treat to trade me for, I don't have to worry about the my toys. They'll be there the next time I go out. I stopped being a jerk about toys.
I would probably do best in a home that doesn't mind being toy free. I don't need the temptation.
I don't do bones or long lasting treats. It's too much like a toy, and it makes me feel weird.

WHat's great about me?
I don't guard food, or water or blankets. I take treats super gently. I'll even dance or sit for a treat.
I walk great on a leash. I love to cuddle. I like to climb up on things to see the world. I ride great in cars. I crate super easy.
I lay by the shelter manager's feet in her office and I'm super quiet.

This is my biggest wish:
I just want a home with a human that loves smart dogs, wants to be my best friend, and understands that I don't need toys to be happy.
I love you humans, I'm sorry I've been scared and a jerk this last year.
I'm so happy now. I'm ready for a home that understands the past is a part of our journey, but it isn't who we are right now or going to be tomorrow.

If you're interested in adopting me, please submit an application at https://biglakehumane.org/adoption-process-application/

****Please note that some other pet adoption sites may not update their listings promptly after an animal is adopted, or they might not reflect new intakes, all animals in our care, or updates to each animal's bio. Big Lake Humane Society's Adoption Policy
Adoption Process You must be 21 years or older to adopt. Please bring a valid form of I.D. We generally do not do same-day adoptions. Please plan a visit to the shelter to work with our adoption counselor and pick out an animal that best fits your lifestyle. All members of the household must visit with the potential new family member before the adoption is finalized. We want to make sure it's a good fit for everyone! If you are planning on adopting a dog and already have an existing dog, we ask that you leave them at home during your first visit. Once you've picked out a dog you'd like to adopt, you can schedule an appointment with an adoption counselor to bring your dog to the shelter to meet your potential new pet. This is not necessary for cats. We then ask that you fill out our adoption application and allow 24-72 hours to process and approve your application. Renters must provide a copy of their lease (including pet policy). We require a Veterinary reference for adopters who currently or recently had a pet. If you do not have any pets or have not had one recently, we do ask that you put a deposit at a Veterinary clinic (of your choice) to cover the cost for your first visit. After you are approved we schedule an appointment to return to the shelter to finalize your adoption. If at any time you are unable to keep the pet or offer it proper care, we ask that you bring it back to the shelter before alternate arrangements are made. Multiple applications can be submitted for the same animal; adoptions are not decided on a first come basis. Our adoption committee looks at each application in order to decide the best home for the animal. Our mission is to give each of our animals the best environment for their personality, in order to ensure they have this home forever. Applications may be denied for any reason. We reserve the right to deny adoptions to people who have surrendered their animals in the past. Our adoptions include: Feline: Spay/Neuter, Rabies (based on age), Distemper, Deworming, Flea/Tick treatment, preventative, FIV/FELV test for stray intake, and Microchip. Canine: Spay/Neuter, Rabies (based on age), Distemper, Bordetella, Deworming, Flea/tick treatment and preventative, Heartworm test, ProHeart 6 Heartworm Prevention (age appropriate) and Microchip. Adoption Fees: $100 for Cats, $ 50 for seniors 8 years and up, $150 for Kittens (2nd for $50), $300 for Dogs, $ 100 for seniors 8 years and up, and $350 for Puppies 6 months & younger. SENIOR TO SENIOR Adoption Program: 65+ humans qualify for a free senior cat adoption or a $50 senior dog adoption.
