Meet 2311-1541 Maverick

Maverick is a striking dog. He immediately grabs your attention weighing in at a slim ninety pounds, with tall lean legs, a black coat, salt and pepper paws, and a white tipped tail. When he is standing on his hind legs staring back at you face-face through the kennel, he can be a little intimidating, that is, until you notice his BIG SMILE and wagging tail. Once outside, he is just a big friendly two-year-old pup that wants to play.

Maverick has a special spot in the front lobby where he often likes to hang out, and where he has appointed himself VBACAC ambassador. If you call his name, he will pop up from behind the barrier to say hello and see if you need help. Come visit him!

Maverick is:

Friendly and sociable with people - a staff favorite! He's a big, active boy and would probably do better with older children.
A participant in our shelter playgroup, he gets along with most other dogs in his group. We have him with larger dogs like himself with similar play styles; we do not know how he would be with smaller dogs or cats for that matter!
Playful - loves to run and fetch.
Housetrained.
Calm and quiet on car rides, first time in a new car may need a little coaxing.

Maverick recently went on a field trip with one of his favorite volunteers and here's his report:

Maverick did great on our first field trip. I started by giving him a chance to run and play fetch in the yard. His fetch style is to charge after the ball, run right back at you full speed, and release the ball ten feet before he gets to you.

After a little coaxing, Maverick jumped in the car on his own. He was a little nervous at first, but after a couple of blocks he relaxed. By the end of the ride, he was looking out the window and sniffing through the top of the cracked car window. When we parked, he patiently waited while I unclipped the restraint, and then calmly got out of the car.

It was early and cold at the beach, but Maverick had no issues passing the few people and dogs we encountered on the boardwalk. A bicyclist sped past us close from behind and it startled me more than Maverick!
