1192 Roxie's Story
Roxie is being fostered in Waterford MI

Roxie is currently fostered in Waterford MI. This silky haired blue-eyed beauty Australian Shepherd is approximately 2.5 years old weighing in at 39lbs. Roxie came into MASR foster from the Oakland County Animal Shelter, where she was surrendered by her owners due to concerns surrounding her behavior towards family members visiting the home. She had the same owners, a senior couple, for the first 1.5yrs of her life and was then “rehomed” to an unknown individual because she had too much energy. Supposedly she was then “given away” to friends of that person a month later, who in turn surrendered to the shelter her a few months later.
Roxie can be fearful at times. Fearful dogs communicate distress through distinct body language and behaviors. Root causes contributing to fearful behavior can be genetics, lack of socialization and past trauma or adverse experiences. Fearful Dogs require knowledgeable and patient humans. Roxie's foster mom has recognized that and one of the things Roxie is fearful of is children. She will stop, observe and listen to children playing but does not want to be pursued by or interact with them. For this reason, Roxie would be best suited for a Furever Family that is an adult only home, or a home with older teens who can understand her boundaries.
Roxie has an adorable lovable personality once there is a trust bond built with her people. New meetings can be tricky to navigate as Roxie gets overstimulated easily and does not enjoy people looming over her to meet her, so anyone that wants to meet her, will need to be calm and patient. Roxie will defend her boundaries when anxious and overstimulated, as most fearful dogs do. Once she is ready, she will wiggle her butt as she flips over attention and belly rubs!

Roxie knows basic commands like Sit, Down and Stay. She loves her treats so the training process is not difficult and should be a constant in her life. She is crate trained and housebroken, although not being forced into a crate at the current foster because she was reported to have been in a crate 24/7 for several months prior to her surrender. She has done well in the foster home not crated and left to the run of the house with the resident foster dogs.
Roxie is not overly destructive of toys or “things”. She loves her toys...and everyone else's too! She will share toys with other dogs but tends to resource guard them from people a bit, so trading her has been ongoing training so she realizes she can give it up and get it back. She will gladly flop her rope toy onto your leg to play Tug with...but good luck trying to win as this little girl is feisty and strong. She is a collector of “things”, and particularly fond of socks, and once she has possession of something it's best to just let her have it as she will guard “things” she collects.

Roxie can be dog selective, so meet and greet in a neutral location is necessary. She does well when at the local doggie daycare and prefers to be in with the bigger dogs, who are more tolerable of her rough and tumble play style. She has a great partner in crime with the larger male dog in the foster home. They will play and run together but she struggles to socialize or engage with the two older female resident dogs in the foster home. Nonetheless, all the canines at the foster home are tolerable and respectful of each other's boundaries. Cats are an unknown and not recommended for Roxie as the Foster feels she would much rather herd them than exist quietly with cats.
Roxie has fairly good leash manners, always checking in and making eye contact while walking on leash...until she gets distracted or excited about meeting the next person walking by, at which point he will have a tendency to pull. She is refocused fairly easily with a slight change in direction and a quick verbal command. Roxie also has good recall, preferring to be at your side when you want her to be. Car rides are sometimes tricky as the foster is desensitizing her to make her more comfortable. At times, she will jump right in and other times, she needs more coaxing or a boost to get in a vehicle. Once in, she rides well.

Roxie's Needs:
-A dedicated owner/family who understands Roxie has not had a great foundation for the first few years of her life.
-Someone who understands boundaries has patience to create a safe environment for her to continue her desensitization.
-A large, securely fenced in yard to run and play.

Roxie's Wants:
-An Adventure Buddy or Family that will take her on walks and provide her with lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation.
-An unlimited supply of toys/balls to play with, snacks to beg for and socks to steal!
Roxie is spayed, negative for all tickborne diseases, up to date on vaccinations, is
microchipped, dewormed and on monthly prevention for fleas, ticks and heartworm. Proof of heartworm prevention for any current or previous pets is required to adopt from our organization.
