1142 Shep's Story

Shep is fostered in Arlington Heights, IL

Shep is an incredibly smart, goofy Australian Shepherd who is estimated to be about 3 years old and weighs about 45 pounds. Shep is energetic, eager to please, and always looking for his next job - whether he's learning a new trick, solving a puzzle, or tossing his toys in the air to entertain himself, Shep is happiest when his mind and body are engaged. He's also a sweet, affectionate Velcro dog who loves being with his people and will happily rest his head in your lap when he's ready for some attention.

Shep is looking for a family that appreciates all the things that make herding dogs special:

A smart dog who learns quickly and loves a challenge
The loyalty and companionship of a true Velcro dog
A sharp mind that's always eager to learn something new through training, enrichment, and problem-solving
The potential to excel in activities like agility, scent work, trick training, and other dog sports
A goofy personality complete with endless wiggles and zoomies

Training & Daily Life: Shep is fully house trained with no accidents in foster care. He does great when left alone in a dog-safe room. He's also crate-trained - while he'd rather not be left in the crate alone, he will happily go into his crate for a treat at bedtime.

Shep is non-destructive and doesn't chew things that aren't his, but like many clever Aussies, he is always aware of where the snacks are and is still learning that kitchen counters are off-limits. Shep is a skills rockstar. He is extremely trainable and eager to learn. He knows the basics, as well as stay, rollover, place, touch, leave it, and has excellent recall. He's even learning more advanced skills like look, rest, and find it.

Shep can be somewhat reactive toward dogs and occasionally unfamiliar people on walks, but this is something he is working on in his foster home. He also barks at people or dogs passing by windows. His ideal family should be committed to continued training in this area.

People & Other Pets: Shep previously lived with young children and reportedly did very well with them. However, his energy and training needs may make him too much for small kids.Shep has previously lived with other dogs, but does need to meet any dog that he would be living in an adoptive home with. He would likely do best as an only dog or with an energetic but submissive canine companion.

He has a strong prey drive and will chase squirrels, rabbits, birds, and other small animals. He was reportedly curious about the cat in his previous home, but given his strong prey drive, it may be best for his forever home to be cat-free.

Ideal Home: Shep would do best with an active, patient adopter who understands herding breeds or is committed to learning about them. His ideal family will enjoy training and be excited to continue building on the skills he already knows, and knows that reactivity training is a journey, not an overnight fix.

Shep needs daily exercise, mental enrichment, and opportunities to use his brain. A securely fenced yard is strongly preferred and would provide a great outlet for his energy and prey drive. He would likely be happiest as an only dog or with an energetic, compatible canine companion. For the right home, Shep will be an incredibly loyal companion, training partner, and best friend.

Shep is neutered, up-to-date on all vaccinations, heartworm negative, microchipped and receiving monthly preventatives for fleas, ticks and heartworms. Proof of heartworm prevention for any current or previous pets is required to adopt from our organization.
