Tula & Sushi's Story

Sushi & Tula are bonded sisters, gentle cats that are about 14 months old now. They have been waiting a long time for their forever home. Tula (grey & white tabby) will make shy with strangers at first but will come along quickly - she is very social with her foster family. Sushi (black & white) is shier & more skittish than her sister - she will need a little patience while she adjusts. Sushi’s foster mom makes a point of calmly going to Sushi to pet or pick her up. It is so rewarding when you win the trust of a shier cat like Sushi and know that you have rescued a young cat that would otherwise be living in fear on the streets. These two sweet girls are good with other cats and would do best in a calmer home. They are unproven with dogs.

Sushi & Tula have been spayed, vaccinated, microchipped & vet checked. Sushi is FIV positive; Tula is not. Cats with FIV can live long happy indoor lives with this virus and not infect other cats. Sushi is otherwise in good health.

About FIV
-------------
We know so much more about FIV now. FIV is a feline only, slow-acting virus that compromises a cat's immune system over a long period of time. Cats can live long healthy indoor lives with FIV. FIV cannot be transmitted to people or other animal species and it is not easily passed to other cats. FIV is passed between cats through a deep bite – deep enough to inject saliva into the bloodstream of the other cat. You often see these types of bites with males fighting for territory outdoors. FIV is "NOT" passed between cats through shared food bowls, shared litter boxes or through playing, wrestling or licking/cleaning each other. Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a long-term study in cat shelters and found that FIV-positive cats can live with FIV-negative cats and not infect the FIV-negative cats during normal day-to-day interaction. Studies over the last 10 years have also shown that cats with FIV often live as long as cats that do not have this virus. We have included links to information on FIV below.

Cornell University - https://www.vet.cornell.edu/.../feline-immunodeficiency...
Ontario SPCA - https://ontariospca.ca/.../positive-doesnt-need-to-be.../

Hearts to Homes Feline Rescue & Sanctuary's Adoption Policy
Our adoption process includes an interview, an agreement with a reference and we deliver the cat(s). We have two big asks that form part of the agreement – 1) that you agree not to declaw and 2) that you agree not to let the cat roam free outdoors. Please note that for kittens, we look for them to be adopted into a home with another active, playful cat or to be adopted in pairs. We have found that kittens do best developmentally with feline companionship. When adopting, we ask adopters to consider the following: 1. consider the time commitment; cats live 15 - 20 years; 2. consider the financial commitment of food, litter, annual veterinary care; 3. if renting, ensure the acceptability of pets to your landlord; 4. commit to keeping the cat safe and commit to not de-clawing.
