SAMMY's Story

Introducing Sammy!

This Persian or Persian-mix cat is approximately 3 years young, sweet, friendly and affectionate. He allows all handling, being picked up and held. He loves to play! He also loves his human's undivided attention and wants to be the center of attention all the time. We call these kinds of cats, "velcro kitties" Due to their high need for their human's attention we prefer he go to a home where someone is home part or most of the day so he does not grow lonely or bored.

Sammy will soon be taking the long flight to the USA from Cairo, Egypt. He is part of our international cat rescue mission which has become critical as the conflicts in the Middle East are increasing the number of cats at risk!

How can a cat like Sammy be available? Like many cats, no matter the breed, their owners will just leave them behind when they no longer want them or can no longer keep them. This has caused an overpopulation crisis in the region, as these cats are usually not fixed and are producing countless litters of kittens. There are few rescuers in this region who are tirelessly trying to help. This is why cats like Sammy roam the streets in countless numbers. Most of these cats are sweet, domesticated and are at risk of horrific harm or death.

We know that Sammy would be fine in a home with other cats (after a slow introduction) since he lives in a foster home with several other cats. We will be testing his tolerance to dogs before deciding if he can be placed in a home with a dog. *We prefer that adopters with a dog have had their dog introduced to cats in the past (if not already living with cats) so that the dog already knows how to respect a cat's boundaries.

Like all of our cats Sammy has been fixed, and is fully vaccinated (1 year rabies and 2 x FVRCP/distemper), he is blood tested negative for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FLeV (feline leukemia), he is microchipped, and he has been treated for all parasites prior to adoption.

How can you be considered as an adopter?

To be considered for adoption for any of our available cats, you must submit an adoption application found on our website below;

https://savingfancycats.org/adoption-application

We read every application that is submitted and it can take us 3-5 business days to respond to most applicants. We are an all volunteer run rescue organization with no paid administrative staff to assist us with the influx of applicants. We cannot possibly respond to ALL applicants. If we believe you may be a potential match for the cat(s) we will respond to you via email. This email will detail all the next steps required in order for you to be officially approved as an adopter. Our email can easily be flagged as spam/junk so please check those folders for our response.

We will ask all potential adopters who pass the first step to submit/complete the following;
-2+ personal references
-1+ veterinary reference
-home interior photos/videos or in person tour
-your building's pet policy from management or your landlord (if you rent)
-1+ alternative designated caretaker(s) for the cat(s)
-scheduled phone interview with a member of our team

*General inquiries about any cat cannot be responded to without an application submitted first. If the cat is on petfinder.com the cat is still available.

We have a flight from the region approximately every 4-6 weeks. We choose which cats will take the flight based upon their popularity, and/or if there are potential adopters that are likely to progress to adoption. We cannot always control the flight date as it is based upon the airlines availability. Once you have passed our adoption application process we can confirm the next flight date for the cat you're interested in.

Even though all cats are healthy on the day of travel to the USA, all cats will spend 14-21 days at our cattery in New Jersey post arrival. This is to ensure the cats do not develop any post travel health issues that we need to treat prior to adoption.

All adopters must be willing and able to travel to NJ to meet and pick up the cat(s). We do not adopt outside of a 200 mile radius from our northern NJ base.

The adoption fee is posted on the pet's profile on petfinder.com (not the app) and it is non-negotiable as it covers all vetting and travel expenses for this cat and assists our rescue partners overseas in the expenses they have in the process of rescuing cats found on the streets.

What your (tax deductible) adoption fee/donation covers:

-Spay/Neuter surgery
-Full vaccinations (2 x distemper/FVRCP and feline rabies)
-Blood Tests - FIV, FLeV, Heartworm, in some cases additional blood work
-Anti-Parasitics - all cats are dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks, ear mites.
-Microchipped - All cats have a registered microchip
-Veterinary Care - Any conditions we find will be managed prior to adoption. This is why we have a 14 - 21 day hold on all cats coming into the USA. This may delay the cat's ability to go to their new home. NO cat will leave our care until they are healthy for adoption and have been cleared by our veterinarian.
-Travel Passes/Fees- the adoption fee also pays for the cat's travel from Egypt or other country to the USA.

*Please keep in mind that a majority of the cats for adoption from the Middle East were found in terrible condition, some requiring extensive veterinary care and/or surgery. We do not increase the adoption fees despite the additional funds used to rehabilitate these cats.

**You may see our cats posted on petfinder elsewhere, or other adoption sites with our rescue partners in Canada and Europe! We are working together to find great homes for these cats and move them out of the Middle East to make space for more! If the cat is still on petfinder.com he/she is available but all potential adopters will be notified if their status changes.

***Can't adopt right now? Please consider sponsoring one or more of the cats on our petfinder page so that we can assist our rescue partners with food and litter and proper veterinary care.
