Lonnie

Lonnie arrived at Orange County Animal Care as a stray and, sadly, no one came to claim him. Estimated to be 10 years old and weighing just 9 lbs., Lonnie became a Frosted Face and received the care he needed, including being neutered and having a dental.<br/><br/>When Lonnie first joined us, he was extremely shy and fearful. We celebrated every small step - like the day he chose to perch on a cat tree instead of hiding away. Beneath his timid exterior is a sweet, sensitive soul who is trying so hard to trust and be brave! <br/><br/>Thankfully, Lonnie was selected for a two-week Frosted Fling, giving him the chance to decompress. In a home environment, he's been doing so well that his fling was upgraded to a foster placement, where he can continue building confidence while he waits for his forever family. We couldn't be happier for Lonnie, and we think it's a wonderful sign of the bright future ahead of him!<br/><br/>Here's the scoop from his understanding foster mom:<br/>"Lonnie has made great progress in 4 weeks from being completely shut down to now looking more comfortable and observing from the places he feels safe. He still needs hiding places and sits in my home office observing or sleeping during the day. But, in the last week I am getting sniffs of my hands if I place them near him and slow blinks. He also engages in play with toys that have feathers for around 15 seconds.<br/><br/>Lonnie seems to enjoy the company of my resident senior cat, who sits near by, and they blink at each other and sleep. When my foster dog when close by he hissed and swatted, but that's to be expected. At night, Lonnie definitely comes to life! He uses the cat tree and other beds in my office, and only at this time will he use his litter box. He uses it perfectly every time. In the last few days, he has moved to the tree and used the litter box in the evenings when I am in the other room, but the door is open, and he can hear usual family life.<br/><br/>Recently, Lonnie has let me pet his head a little and seems to be tolerant and maybe enjoying it with slow blinks. He never bites or scratches. Lonnie is a very good eater! He enjoys a mix of wet and dry food but will only eat substantial amounts at night when alone in the dark. He is also a BIG chicken fan so during the day he gets treats and snacks of Churu chicken and some cooked chicken breast - we have been doing this several times a day to build a positive association with human interaction. <br/><br/>It is still going slow, but I truly see an improvement in Lonnie's behavior and confidence week to week. I think he needs a very experienced cat owner who understands that Lonnie needs space and time; it may take months to see changes.
