Meet Gammie

Gammie's life took a dramatic and life altering turn, this week. Just another example of how the most terrible thing you can imagine happening can (and often WILL) open doors to the brightest future, imaginable.

Gammie was an ordinary community cat, living on the same street for a few years. She was known by the neighbors and is a friendly cat. Eartipped and ownerless... she had a few good friends and eeked out a living in her little world.

Last week, Gammie must have been attacked by another animal. She sustained deep puncture wounds and a badly broken back leg. When she turned up to her meals dragging her leg, the sweet ladies that look after her started making calls. These folks tried several rescues and shelters... finding no help for Gammie. By the time they called us, they were exasperated. We could hear the cat wailing in the background and it sounded serious. With our friends at VOCAL clinic closed for quarterly cleaning this week, we were at a loss. We also use Sheltering Hands but they cant help with this kind of injury. Knowing we are financially unable to take on an injury of this sort without our low cost parnters (and after having Diogi at the ER), we referred the good Samaritans to take the cat to another local clinic that we thought would help. We told them we would take over if they were turned them away.

We got that call about 20 minutes later...

So we called in a favor to our friends at Marion County Animal Services. They have the ability to x-ray Gammie's leg and they readily agreed to help her! We picked Gammie up from her kind neighborhood feeders and drove her straight to MCAS. They gave her pain meds and antibiotics (the puncture wounds were super infected)... putting her on the surgical schedule for the following day.

Teamwork, like this, is how animals like Gammie WIN! Her leg was amputated by the team at MCAS the following day (Wednesday) and she was ready for pickup the next day. We tried to reward her for her courage with a pup cup... but she just wanted LOVE. They even offered to intake her for the adoption program (have we mentioned JUST HOW MUCH WE LOVE THE FOLKS AT MCAS?)!

We are hugely blessed to have a wonderful medical foster waiting to bring Gammie back to health and we had room to intake her, ourselves. She is now being readied for adoption. Her broken leg has led Gammie to a secure, indoor future... full of couches and cushions and warm beds and love.

In life, we must find the silver lining in everything. We can claim a blessing or we can cry about the curse... it is our choice. And Gammie is most certainly showing us ALL that the blessings are much sweeter
