Meet Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury – Available for Adoption

Freddie is a handsome and affectionate older male (about 9 years old) who has had an unsettling few months since he was rescued, but is now doing very well and is ready for adoption. He came to his current foster as one of what was thought to be a bonded pair, since they were rescued together, but it soon became clear that there was no deep bond between the two.

In the short time that he has been on his own, Freddie is no longer the tense, cowering and intimidated kitty that he was when he first arrived, when he clearly longed for his share of attention and affection but found it hard to work up the courage to come close enough to sniff his foster’s fingers and allow his ears to be scratched very briefly. It was impossible to approach him, as any movement caused him to flee and hide. Now he is gaining confidence and trust every day, emerging as a very different -- and far happier -- cat. He is quite a character and very affectionate, although so far at least, it is always on his terms. Building trust takes time and Freddie will require patience, but that patience will be rewarded with purrs, head butts and affection. After only a few days on his own, he now allows his foster to approach him to scratch his ears and under his chin, even occasionally rolling over so that his tummy can tickled.

Freddie will need a quiet home with no other pets and no children and while he will reward his new human(s) with lots of affection, he also likes time to himself. He has been sleeping on a cushion by a front window that gives him a good view of the passing world and his pattern seems to be that he is happy to see his foster when he’s greeted in the morning, eager for a few pets and some conversation, but he will then usually disappear until mid-afternoon. He still has wary moments and will flee from unexpected noises or movement, but he's now far more relaxed overall. He is often discovered 'observing' his foster from a distance, but he's no longer tense and ready to bolt, just watchful.

Freddie sometimes enjoys playing with a small catnip mouse or a small ball that rattles, tossing and chasing it. And he loves his scratching box; a scratching post would likely be even better. He also enjoys being brushed and rubs his chin against the stiff bristles. Not sure if he will ever allow anyone to pick him up and so far he's not at all a lap cat, although he will join his foster on the sofa, lying usually a safe distance away, only occasionally close enough to get his back stroked or his ears scratched.

Freddie will provide enormous pleasure to whomever is lucky enough to adopt him. He's a really beautiful boy with lots and lots of potential. He will need time and patience while he adjusts to yet another new situation (and sadly there is no way of explaining to him that this will be his last move). But he's made great progress in the time that he has been with his current foster, particularly since he's been on his own. Right now, Freddie is going from strength to strength!

Freddie Mercury (9 years old) is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. If you are interested in meeting him, contact Boston's Forgotten Felines on Facebook or at catadoptions@bostonsforgottenfelines.org!
