A group of local trappers, Strays of Sunshine, were working to trap several cats who were scheduled to be sent to another shelter for TNR. But when they came across Buster, something about this big orange tabby made them stop and take a closer look.<br/><br/>They didn't think Buster belonged with the others. So instead of sending him along with the group, they reached out to WARL. We said yes, and that's how this handsome boy found his way to us. And we're so glad they did.<br/><br/>Buster is a big orange tabby with a big personality, and he deserves the chance to find out what life is like when you're not simply surviving outside, but finally have a safe place to call home.<br/><br/>During his time with us, we also learned that Buster is FIV positive. We know those three letters can sometimes make adopters nervous, so let's talk about what they actually mean.<br/><br/>FIV, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, affects a cat's immune system. Many FIV-positive cats live long, happy lives, especially when they have a safe indoor home, good nutrition, regular veterinary care, and a family who keeps an eye on their overall health.<br/><br/>FIV is also species-specific, meaning people and dogs cannot catch it. Buster can absolutely share a home with a dog without putting that dog at risk.<br/><br/>FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, which is why Buster's ideal feline roommates would be other FIV-positive cats. It isn't something that is easily passed through simply sharing a home, sleeping near one another, grooming, or sharing food and water.<br/><br/>So what does Buster need? He needs someone who can look past those three letters and see the big orange boy underneath them.<br/><br/>He needs a safe indoor home, a person who will keep up with his veterinary care, and most importantly, someone who will give him the chance to show them who he really is.<br/><br/>There is something especially wonderful about giving a cat like Buster a second chance. He was noticed because someone realized he deserved something different. Now we're hoping the right person will notice him for the same reason.<br/><br/>Maybe Buster isn't the cat you expected to meet.<br/><br/>Maybe he's the cat you didn't know you were looking for.
