ATHOS*'s Story

Athos is looking for a very special home—one that understands that trust isn't given overnight, but earned through patience, consistency, and love. When you first meet her, Athos is extremely shy and fearful. She will likely hiss, and she may swat when she's feeling overwhelmed. These behaviors aren't because she's mean—they're simply her way of saying she's scared and trying to protect herself. She needs someone who will respect her boundaries and allow her to move at her own pace. The beautiful thing about Athos is that, with time and consistency, she begins to realize she's safe. Once that happens, you'll get to see the sweet, loving girl hiding behind all that fear. She learns to enjoy being held, welcomes gentle pets, and absolutely loves to play. She also has plenty to say and is quite the chatty girl once she's comfortable! Athos will thrive with an adopter who understands that healing takes time. She isn't looking for perfection—just someone willing to be patient, celebrate the small victories, and let her build trust at her own pace. In return, you'll watch a scared little soul blossom into an affectionate, playful companion. If you believe that the best relationships are the ones built on patience, understanding, and unconditional love, Athos just might be your perfect match. Athos' adoption fee has been sponsored by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter's Leave No One Behind fund - a fund that draws adopter's eyes towards animals that have been waiting a little bit longer than average for the right adopters to come along and bring them home. Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
