Archie with Merlin-in foster 50% off's Story
Meet Archie! He came in with his friend Merlin, who make a great parakeet pair! Archie is a little more social than Merlin, but still are not at the point where they are comfortable being handled. That being said, they absolutely love millet so you may be able to use that as a training tool. They are a bit picky with trying new veggies, but in a new environment they may be open to more! They are already showing off their beautiful song skills here at the shelter, and make great music to fill your home!

Adoption fee for one parakeet is $25, each additional adopted at the same time has a discounted adoption fee of $20.

As most of our small animals are in fostercare, if you're ready to adopt now and want to learn more about this pet, the best way to start the process is to call us (413-781-4000 x 1) or email us at springfield@dakinhumane.org. If you already have a cage, please send a picture of your cage when you inquire.

Parakeets can live between 7-15 years.

Are you looking for a beautiful sweet new friend? Do you like your pets to be musically inclined? Well then a parakeet like me may be just the critter for you!

Let me tell you more about us. We should get out-of-cage time every day to stretch our wings and relieve boredom. Please give us plenty of toys, swings, and perches, and then sit back and watch for hours of entertainment!

We should be fed a variety of pellets, seeds, and fresh veggies & fruits.

Housing requirements: Most housing sold at pet stores is too small for small pets. They are going to be spending most of their lives inside their cage; your housing must be as large as the below or larger (bigger is always better!) in order to adopt this pet.
- For 1-2 parakeets, 22" wide x 16" deep x 27" high. With more birds the cage must be larger
- Bar spacing no wider than inch
- Parakeets need more horizontal flight space than they do vertical.

Parakeets are a social species, meaning they usually enjoy the company of their own kind. If there are two names listed together (eg Peanut Butter w/Jelly), that means that the two animals are a bonded pair of friends, and must be adopted together.

Got a single at home you're looking for a friend for? Any animal listed alone on our website is a single and a great candidate; if there is a group of 3 or more, usually one can be taken out of that group as a companion for your single.
- A new friend will need a separate cage until friendship has been established
- Parakeets are relatively easy to introduce to one another, as long as there is sufficient space
