Tank's Story

Meet Tank!! (case #15250)

Looking for a pet that's low on drama but high on character? Meet Tank, a large red-eared slider turtle who's ready to cruise into a forever home.

Tank didn't earn that name by accident. With a sturdy shell, a calm demeanor, and the slow-but-steady confidence of someone who has absolutely no deadlines to meet, this shelled friend moves through life at their own pace. Whether basking in the sun, exploring a pond, or quietly judging human decisions from across the yard, Tank has mastered the art of taking it easy.

Tank would love a home with a secure outdoor pond or a spacious turtle setup where they can stretch their legs, soak up some sunshine, and enjoy the good life. Large red-eared sliders can live for decades and grow much bigger than many people expect, which is exactly why so many end up needing rescue.

Unfortunately, red-eared sliders are one of the most commonly abandoned reptiles. People often purchase them as tiny, adorable hatchlings without realizing they'll grow into substantial turtles that require long-term care and space. Some owners release them into local ponds or waterways when they become too large or inconvenient. While it may seem harmless, releasing pet turtles is dangerous. Red-eared sliders can compete with native turtle species for food, basking spots, and habitat, putting additional pressure on local wildlife.

Tank is looking for someone willing to do things the right way: provide a safe home, proper care, and a lifelong commitment. If you've got room in your pond, and in your heart, for a prehistoric-looking companion with plenty of personality, Tank is ready to settle into retirement and enjoy the good life.

Please complete an adoption application:

https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions

Adopters must provide their own enclosure and accessories.

Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only. This allows our Adoption Staff to spend quality time with each potential home to ensure the most successful matches are made between the animals and their new families.

*Please note: we only adopt within Ontario
