Shelldon/Sergei's Story

This animal is currently in Bertram.

Shelldon was acquired at about the age of 7 years by a family for their 7-year-old daughter. That daughter is now 20. Shelldon is 20 now. Shelldon has lived indoors in a homemade habitat for the last 13 years. The family was finally able to convince the daughter Shelldon desired to live outside in an amazing habitat. Let's give that to him. Apply to adopt Shelldon the Russian today so he can come live in your amazing outdoor space. He will love you for it!

Every time a Mediterranean tortoise (Russian tortoises, Greek tortoises, and Hermann's tortoises) comes to the rescue, I personally promise that animal that it will have the best care and that it will always be able to live outdoors where it can enjoy natural sunlight, dirt deep enough for burrowing in, lots of plants and other hiding places, clean fresh water, and a to graze on live vegetation it it's enclosure as if it were in the wild. I also promise nearly every species of tortoise that it is going to an enclosure that is at least 100 square feet to roam that it will NOT be sharing with another tortoise, so it doesn't have to worry about fighting or mating. I can't break my promise to any of these wonderful creatures, so if you choose to open your home and heart to one of them you are extending the same promise to the animal that you adopt. These tortoises are herbivores that should live outdoors year-round and may brumate (hibernate) during the winter.

If you submit photos of your small tortoise habitat (with a piece of paper with your name on it or some other form of authentication in the same frame as the habitat) then we will review your application, otherwise your application will expire in 30 days without being reviewed. Pictures should be e-mailed to info@texastortoiserescue.com (this is the only way to submit your photos - please don't text them to me or send them over Facebook). Habitat must include sturdy walls the tortoise cannot dig or climb out of, at least one hide, a water dish, and plenty of grass. Once your application has been reviewed and approved, I'll send you an e-mail that has a link to my calendar so that you can schedule the pick up at a time that is convenient for you. The adoption fee for this animal is $75, payable through the adoption link I will text you during the adoption or by cash at the time when you pick up the animal.
