Matthew's Story

Matthew is looking for his forever home!!

Matthew was pulled from our local shelter after suffering from the worst neglect we have ever seen.

We found out later that he spent his entire life in a cage the size of his litter box eating guinea pig food and kale. When he would get dirty from the cage not being cleaned, he was tied up to bathe in the sink. Despite this, he was extremely depressed when he came to the shelter after watching his owner pass away and starving for days before he was found.

He was severely burned from urine, unable to hop or move at all, and extremely malnourished. Today, he is a totally different bunny!

After years in a cage, he has some arthritis and atrophy. We are estimating that he is about 7 years old, but he may actually be younger, just looks older after years of fighting to survive on limited nutrition and care.

His right hip has an old injury (likely from being tied up) causing him to hop a little funny and not be able to hop onto couches without a "step" to help him up. With laser therapy, pain medication, and joint supplements, he has built back so much strength and he moves so fast! He is currently well maintained on daily joint supplements and hasn't needed any medication since learning to move like he should!

There is currently no special accommodations needed except for daily joint supplements that can be bought over the counter and adding steps for him to get where he wants to go! However, he is a senior bunny, so vet visits twice a year at minimum will keep him healthy for years to come!

Matthew loves cats, dogs, and everyone he has met so far!! He can be bunny tested in late November.

Matthew is around 7 years old. He's been neutered, microchipped, and is up to date on his RHDV2 vaccine!!

*An application, vet reference, and housing requirement is required prior to adoption

**Cages and hutches are not suitable housing for bunnies and will not be approved as part of housing unless one or more doors are permanently removed

*INDOOR PET ONLY HOME

Operation Bun Bun Rescue's Adoption Policy
The first step is the adoption application. A vet is always called and referenced. Then we reach out to the potential adopter and let them know if we had any issues with the vet reference. If resolved, we do a home check. This can be a quick check to make sure they have adequate litter boxes and space for cats, or making sure our bunnies and small animals have a suitable setup and won't be confined to a cage. This can be done virtually for out of state adoptions. There is always a meet and greet and then a contract must be signed and the adoption fee must be paid before the pet is transferred to the care of the adopter.
