Hoppienheimer Rabbit Rescue and Education's Adoption Policy
Hello! Thank-you for your interest in our adoptable rabbits.
When you adopt over shop you save not only one life but two lives the one you adopted opening up space for another rabbit to be rescued. Rabbit care has evolved, rabbits are now the third most popular pet in America and here at HRRE we want you to have the most updated information to care for your rabbit/s to help them live longer healthier lives with you.
How does adoption work at HRRE:
All rabbits will only be adopted as house rabbits (living indoors with you as a family member.)
To qualify all adopters must live within a two hour radius of the rescue to adopt due to qualified rabbit transportation services not available at this time.
When you email or pm I will contact you to schedule a short video chat to see the area you will house the rabbit/s. This gives us the chance to see the area and you to ask any questions about the area or anything rabbit related.
Then you and I will schedule a time and day convenient for you to come choose and or meet your rabbit/s of choice. At this time you can complete your adoption application and pay the adoption fees by cash or QR codes.
Together we will schedule your rabbit/s bunny delivery convenient for you to help you get your rabbit/s set up and allow us to get a final groom in before their new journey to their furEver home. You must live within two hours of our rescue to qualify to adopt as we don't have any qualified rabbit transportation services available to deliver.
We highly recommend an xpen or dog play yard to house your rabbit/s for space for them to zoomie, binkie, and flop comfortably and allow them some supervised freeroam time. They can be found at any pet store or Amazon and are less expensive than a cage and or hutch.
Heavy ceramic bowls for water are recommended over bottles because they will drink more from a bowl than a bottle.
They require access to hay appropriate to their age and limited pellets. Their diet should be mainly hay available 24/7, fresh leafy greens like romaine, red or green leaf lettuces, arugula, and other appropriate greens that are not gassy veggies like broccoli or sugary veggies like carrots which can cause diarrhea or stomach upsets. Herbs and certain flowers (I have a safe list on my FB page Hoppienheimer Rabbit Rescue and Education) and high quality pellets like Sherwood which has no fillers.
We do not recommend housing rabbits outdoors due to disease, viruses, parasites, hypothermia, hyperthermia, and the risk of predators.
We do not recommend and NO reputable rescue would suggest using any cage/dog kennel or hutches to house rabbits in as these do not provide enough space for a rabbit to live in, they are not easily cleaned to keep sanitary, and wire bottoms are painful to a rabbits feet causing sores and slick bottoms can cause injuries. They should be able to periscope, run circles, & binkie (jump).
All of our rabbits are litter boxes trained and will need time to acclimate to their new environments.
Their litter box should be large enough for them to turn completely around in and lay down in if the choose to. Kiln dried pine pellets are a safe litter that is inexpensive, found at any tractor supply store, and absorbs odors and urine better than any paper bedding products. Please do not use any type of cedar or wood shavings as a bedding or litter for rabbits. Pet stores do not give the most updated or appropriate advice for rabbits.
It is advised to get yearly well checks by an exotic vet or an experienced rabbit savvy vet no different than other pets to check their health, ears, eyes, and especially their teeth and any vaccines offered if available.
To learn the most up-to-date appropriate care for your rabbit/s I recommend following my page along with House Rabbit Society, or The Educated Rabbit.
NOTE: Rabbits do NOT make great first time pets. They have sensitive dietary needs that can be expensive to address given they are exotic pets. If you are a parent interested in adopting for your child/children you as the parent are responsible for the care and upkeep of the pet you take on not your child/children. Rabbits are delicate and easily injured by small children, but can defend themselves by biting teeth and or scratching. Children should be supervised together. Rabbits can live 10+ years so they are a commitment not a gift or a stepping stone to "make" a child be responsible. This is not a judgement but a fact. If you rent make sure you have permission to keep a rabbit.
Thank you,
