Adoption Policy
Our adoption process is built around one goal: giving every dog the best possible chance at a safe, stable, and loving life. That means we look not only at who wants a dog, but at what each dog truly needs. When we skip meaningful “best‑interest” criteria, the relationship can end up being shaped by stress, confusion, or unmet needs — and that’s not fair to the dog, the family, or the community.
Everything starts with a pre-screen review of the Guardian Application. Matching dogs with the right homes isn’t an exact science; it’s more of an art. Sometimes an application will be declined for reasons that may not be obvious from the outside. MAPS uses its judgment, experience, and the information available to make those decisions.
MAPS also reserves the right to make all final decisions about where any dog in our care is placed — whether that’s a foster home or an adoptive home. There’s no promise, stated or implied, that anyone applying for a particular dog will be approved to adopt that dog.
If the pre-screen and background checks go well, we invite applicants to meet the dogs. We schedule a dedicated time so the dog and the applicant can interact without pressure. After that visit, we encourage people to take a few days to think things over. Adoption is a lifelong commitment, and reflection helps ensure it’s the right fit for everyone involved.
Next comes a home and neighborhood visit. If that goes well, the new guardian signs the Adoption Agreement — and that’s the beginning of a lifetime of love with their new companion.
