Our Mission

Our Mission

Our goal is to help our community respond humanely to the needs of animals. The Society provides a shelter for cats and dogs that are lost, abandoned or unwanted, sponsors rabies clinics, offers access to low-cost spay/neuter services, and partners with the local prison in the New Leash On Life obedience training program.

Our website is networked with adoption programs across the country, and we have had folks come from as far away as Alabama, Michigan, California, and Canada to adopt from the Avery Shelter. Every year we adopt more animals than the year before.

Avery County Humane Society is a "Limited Admission" shelter which means we do not have an open door policy. Intakes for animals are done by appointment when space is available. The only shelter in Avery County, our facility is at capacity 100% of the time. When all the shelter cages are full we have no choice but to turn away the next animal regardless of the circumstances. We will not euth
