Our Mission
Prison Greyhounds finds appropriate homes for greyhounds and greyhound lurchers. This includes retired track racers, field racers, blood donors, and the “farm” greyhounds that never raced. Most of our current dogs are greyhound lurcher mixes or "hero hounds".
Lurchers are the forgotten underdogs of the greyhound world. These retired field trial racers are not forgotten by those who lovingly raise and race them, but they are overlooked by many potential adopters. Most lurchers who go through our adoption group are a mix of greyhound and coonhound, although any type of sighthound mix can be considered a lurcher.
Our "hero hounds" are primarily seniors and have spent their lives saving other pets! They are all prior blood donors - a job many people do not even realize is necessary until they are faced with an emergency involving their own pet. The blood donation clinic we partner with takes special care of each dog to ensure they are living comfortable, happy lives, and when they retire, we help them find a family home to live out their golden years.
Special focus is given to greyhounds and lurchers that might get overlooked, perhaps because of age, medical history, past injury, a personality quirk, or even appearance (did you know black dogs are least likely to be adopted?). Prison Greyhounds is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving adopters in Indiana and western Ohio. We are not affiliated with any other adoption group. We support responsible racing and are one of the National Greyhound Association Endorsed Responsible Adoption Groups.
Adoption Policy
Adopters must meet the following requirements:
- Live in Indiana (Ohio, Kentucky, or Illinois may be eligible depending on location and volunteer availability to conduct a home visit)
- Primary applicant(s) at least 25 years old
- Live in a home (no dorms, apartments, etc.)
- Fenced yard (no invisible fences)
- Willingness to keep dog on a leash whenever not in a fenced yard
Adopters must watch a short video explaining care of their new dog, as well as read the Prison Greyhounds adoption handbook. Next, an online application should be completed on our website.
Our board will review your initial application, and if we believe you would be a good match for a greyhound or lurcher, we will reach out to request that you submit the $25 application fee. Please do not submit the application fee until it is requested, as we cannot refund this fee, and we do not want to disappoint anyone.
After the application has been reviewed and fee paid, an adoption coordinator will reach out to conduct a phone call and review some basics of greyhound/lurcher care as well as answer any questions you may have. A home visit will be conducted, and we will work together with your family to determine if the dog you're interested in is the right fit for your household or if another dog might be best.
After adoption, your adoption coordinator will check in with you to ensure your dog is acclimating to the change. If you have any challenges, we are happy to help provide advice!
We look forward to working with you to find your new best friend! To begin the process, visit: https://prisongreyhounds.org/adoption/
