Story's Story
Story is ready to be your best friend, most loyal partner, and show you what freedom truly feels like. This mare has the fire of a Mustang, with a gentle, kind spirit.

STORY'S BACKGROUND

Story was a wild-caught BLM mustang and had professional training with a gentle TIP trainer before finding a home with an owner who used primarily R+. After suffering a severe injury to her tail, she was surrendered to SKE to ensure she could get the care she needed and best chance at recovery.

STORY'S TRAINING

Story has done an excellent job breezing through our "life skills" checklist! Her education has been 100% R+ (clicker training, fear-free/force-free) since arrival. Her list of behaviors includes:

- Haltering
- Leading (with halter, off a target, or off body language/at liberty)
- Nose targeting (target stick & hand targets)
- Stationary targeting (at a cone, mat, or bucket)
- Body handling (for brushes, petting, vet, etc.)

- Veterinary handling (checking eyes, ears, nose, teeth/mouth, teats, etc.)
- Cooperative injections (IV & IM)
- Cooperative oral medications (via syringe, though she will also eat medications mixed into food)
- Cooperative eye drops/ointments
- Cooperative aerosol spray (like aluminum spray / aluspray)
- Cooperative fly spray
- Trailer loading (both ramp & step up; turning to walk off & backing off)

Story is very, very intelligent and very eager to please. She is probably the most willing & human-focused Mustang we've encountered at SKE. Story has done well with our equine agility obstacles and LOVES clicker training games!

Story was ridden by her previous owner but has not yet been under saddle with us. She began her riding foundations, but this was interrupted by our head trainer getting injured. She will hopefully begin riding again as soon as our trainer heals up! The work she's done so far was wonderful - she stands for tacking, lines up at the mounting block, and is happy to accept weight on her back.

Story has been doing scentwork wither her foster family and is becoming an excellent scent tracker!

STORY'S HEALTH HISTORY

Story is between 10-15 years old (she is BLM branded and we are working to get her official age updated here as soon as we can). She is approx. 15.1-2 hh with a thick, sturdy build! She should be ok to carry larger adults for casual/infrequent rides and should easily carry average sized riders for high-impact/performance rides.

Story is an easy, easy keeper! She does not require any special supplementation nor grain to stay thick and round. She has a LOT of gorgeous mane and loves to have it brushed & braided!

Story has healthy, strong mustang hooves. Living in an enriched pasture with varied terrain, she tends to “self trim” well enough that she needs minimal human assistance. When she does get trims, she cooperates at liberty, using R+ and consent cues. It’s important to note that SKE does not train restraint-based farrier care. That said, she is very good with her hoof handling and would likely be fine with a kind/gentle traditional farrier.

Story has not had any soundness issues since we've known her. Aside from her tail injury, she has not had any major health complications, nor other veterinary problems that we are aware of.

STORY'S TAIL (or lack thereof)

Story suffered a catastrophic injury that left her without a tail. Her tail was not surgically amputated. She arrived at SKE with her spine open to the air and spinal fluid leaking from the wound. In true Mustang fashion, she made a miraculous recovery with supportive care only and avoided surgery.

Story's tail will never grow back. She does not appear to have any balance/coordination issues, but this type of injury could potentially prevent her from doing high-level performance activities.

The main effect from her lack of tail is inability to swish flies. We have used a variety of fly prevention methods - sprays, wipe on, boots, masks, and full-body sheets. She is comfortable with all of these options and familiar with consent cues, allowing her to communicate which option she prefers (it's really interesting watching her preferences change in different weather, temperature, etc!).

You can read about Story's tail injury and view her healing progress pictures at skequine.com/story

HOW TO ADOPT STORY

SKE seeks adopters who have good intentions & good core values to direct them on their horsemanship journey - plus the knowledge, resources, & facilities to provide a great life to their adopted equine. If you feel that describes you, we would love for you to provide Story with an amazing home!

Start the application process by filling the adoption application:
skequine.com/adopt

Contact SKE with any questions or concerns:
adopt@skequine.com

Story is available for adoption through SKE for $2,500. This fee will increase when she is under saddle. She’s located at a foster home near St. Louis, Missouri, USA and transportation is available in the US & most of Canada.

Thank you so much for considering Story, she is certain to capture your heart and make her adopter incredibly happy!
