Britney - Companion only's Story

Britney

Hackney mare

12.3HH est

gaited

2005

From trainer June 2025:

1) Britney is not 11, upon having the vet check she was stated to be 20! I have the sneaking suspicion she is one of those ponies who is gonna outlive us all.
2) She got moved to a different area where she gets significantly more human interaction and gets to be right in the center of alll the action at the rescue. In just a few short days her anxious behaviors have decreased significantly.
3) We have been working on self haltering & being able to be led around by her face without a halter. To me the second skill is a hidden vital tool. For the days when there is no halter or the halter broke, I try to make sure that something as a hand around their cheeks is enough pressure to follow. (I have a second video coming up about it.)
4) I worked today on introducing her to fly spray, and while we definitely had some moments of her moving away. She got bolder and more confident and wasn't attempting to fully bolt, just move in a loose circle around me. This was an amazing insight to how well her nervous system is learning to regulate without overreacting.

Horses are typically located in the Appalachian area, but please inquire about a horse's specific location when you apply!

We are looking to adopt to safe homes.

A history of good horsemanship, the ability to provide sufficient care with good vet, farrier and peer references are important. If you are a first-time horse owner, we will require you to board at a facility for the first year while you learn more about care. We encourage everyone to take advantage of riding lessons.

Foal adoptions require previous, established experience with youngsters.

Our adoption process makes sure you get the right horse for you – it is a no-fail process for finding the right match.

Apply at https://www.wvhorserescue.org/adopt
