Zola's Story

Meet Zola

Zola is a 2 year old Shih Tzu weighing about 12 pounds, and she's one of those little dogs you need to give some time before you get to see the fun stuff.

She is quiet and nervous around people, but after three months in foster care, her foster has had the chance to see more of the dog underneath that initial fear. Zola plays with toys, loves playing with the other small dogs and, once she's comfortable in her surroundings, apparently has a little bit of sass in there too.

Other dogs are where Zola really shines. She plays well with the small dogs in her foster home and is much more comfortable having canine company around. Because of that, another friendly, compatible small dog is required in her new home. She has also lived with cats and is happy to leave them alone.

Zola is part of our Special Circumstances Adoption Program because people are still much harder for her than dogs are. She doesn't like being picked up, and children make her nervous. She needs an adult home where nobody will rush her into interaction or expect her to become a lap dog on a schedule.

She's currently using pee pads and working on leash training. Outside is still a lot for Zola, and she can panic, so a securely fenced yard is required. For now, having that safe space gives her somewhere to get outside without asking her to manage more than she's ready for.

There are plenty of things Zola already knows how to do. She knows how to play. She knows how to live with other small dogs. She knows how to use her pee pads. She can be left without showing separation anxiety. And her foster has already discovered that the very quiet little dog who arrived three months ago has opinions once she gets comfortable.

We don't know how far Zola will progress or which things may always be difficult for her. What we do know is that she doesn't need to accomplish everything before she can have a home of her own. She needs the right home, one that understands where she is now and can keep working from there.

Special Circumstances Adoption Program:
Zola's adoption fee is $300. If her adopter completes the educational course and a private session with a positive reinforcement trainer, the full $300 adoption fee is refunded.

The program also means Zola's adopter won't be figuring everything out alone. MARS will continue to provide support and resources as she settles into her new home.

If you've got a quiet household, a friendly little dog looking for a playmate, a securely fenced yard and room for a 12 pound Shih Tzu with a cautious start and a bit of sass underneath it, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply to adopt Zola:
https://form.jotform.com/243494963032258

At Myrtle Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, every dog adopted comes with:
* Spay/Neuter
* Core vaccines
* Rabies vaccine (age dependent)
* 4DX test for heartworm & tick borne diseases (age dependent)
* Flea, tick & heartworm prevention
* Parasite treatment
* 30 days of Trupanion Pet Insurance
* Microchip
* Dental surgery if recommended by our veterinary partner
* A session with a positive reinforcement trainer
* Ongoing support from our team because adoption is just the beginning

#MyrtleAnimalRescue #MARSRescue #StThomasOntario #SpecialCircumstancesAdoption #OntarioDogRescue
