Zoe's Story

Zoe (a female Chihuahua Mix)

Weight approx. 13 lbs.
Age 5-6 years old
Features house-trained, spayed, dental, microchipped, UTD
on vaccines.

Zoe has some training. She sits, has some understanding of stay and down, walks well on leash. She socializes well with other dogs at shelter. She is very cuddly and likes attention.

The shelter environment is making her feel overwhelmed and overstimulated, resulting in frequent barking which elevates her stress and decreases her focus, though she is settling in and doing much better. However, she is calmer on home visits—a volunteer takes Zoe home occasionally and finds that while there she is a pleasant dog who is cuddly, well-mannered.

Zoe still has lots of energy and will do best with regular walks, a fenced-in yard to explore. A fenced in yard is best for her to be able to run (or careful and constant leashing if no fence) since she previously ran away. She was a picky eater when she first arrived. She is doing much better and is eating soaked dry food and some canned. We are working on her eating just canned.
She is a food-guarder so common sense needs to be used at this time. As typical with the Chihuahua breed, she has been snippy with people at times, and can exhibit reactivity to various stimuli, particularly when stressed.

Zoe is not recommended for children under 12.

No apartments as she is an alert barker and would bark at any sound in hallways.

For more information and to meet Zoe, please contact Barb at West Deer Dog Shelter at dogshelter@westdeertownship.com
