Xena's Story

Meet Xena!!!

**FOSTERED IN PANAMA CITY**

Xena is an energetic, 130 lb, 4-year-old female Great Dane with striking markings—and the bounce of a kangaroo! She’s currently being fostered in Panama City, FL.

Xena came into rescue after surviving a heartbreaking backyard breeder/hoarding situation, where she and over a dozen other dogs were starved and neglected. Despite her rough start, she is incredibly affectionate and loyal. She loves nothing more than being your shadow, climbing into your lap for snuggles, and curling up with you in bed if she’s allowed. She’s also perfectly content sleeping in her own bed.

She’s housebroken and picking up basic commands quickly. She pulls a bit on the leash but is steadily improving. She's even been off-leash in the front yard (under supervision) and sticks close by, coming when called.

Xena LOVES to play—and when she plays, she plays hard! Her favorite sparring partner is her Great Dane foster brother, Ranger. The two of them have some epic backyard wrestling matches, full of hops, pounces, and zoomies. True to form, Xena thinks she’s part kangaroo, and her joyful, bouncy nature sometimes gets the best of her.

She gets along well with Ranger and is actually quite protective of him. Because of this, slow, structured introductions are important when meeting new dogs. She’s played successfully with other dogs while in boarding and also does well with cats. She adores adults and children, but her size and enthusiasm may be too much for toddlers—she’s a lot of dog!

Xena thrives in a home with a mellow, easygoing male canine companion to assert her authority over, or she can shine as a solo diva. She requires a calm environment to prevent further injury from rough play, yet she adores her humans and would happily reign as the queen bee of her own household.

She is spayed, microchipped, dewormed, and fully vaccinated. She also completed treatment for Ehrlichia, a tick-borne disease, with a full course of doxycycline. Her adoption fee is $350.

To apply to adopt Xena, please visit www.nwflgdr.com/adopt and carefully read the requirements before submitting an application.

Please note: NWFLGDR does not transport. All approved adopters must pick up their new dog in person from the foster home, and if the sleepover trial doesn’t work out, the adopter is required to return the dog directly to the foster.

We allow exceptions in rare medical instances upon verification with your vet only. 2. All Dogs and outdoor Cats in your home MUST be current and have been kept historically up to date on annual vaccinations and monthly (or semiannual) heartworm and flea prevention. You must own the property in which you live or your landlord must be willing to verify that you are allowed to have a Great Dane in your rental home. We check property records.? 5. Our Great Danes require a sturdy fenced in yard, particularly young or active danes. Generally, a six-foot or higher privacy fencing is preferred. In certain circumstances, the Board may waive this requirement depending upon the Dane's personality and temperament. Any such exceptions will solely be at the discretion of the Rescue Board. Under no circumstances will we consider invisible or electric fencing as acceptable. 6. We only adopt Dogs as indoor pets. We will not adopt Dogs to be used as guard dogs or to be kept out-of-doors. 7. A home visit is required for ALL adoptions, without exception. This is not a white-glove inspection, rather it is to ensure that the home is a safe environment for the Great Dane. 8. We do not transport. If you are applying from out of area or out of state, understand that if your application gets approved, you will be expected to pick up the dane in the location that he/she is being fostered. It will take us more time to get the home visit set up. At any time, if you have questions about the status of your application, please email the rescue at nwflgdr@gmail.com.
