Wynnona's Story

We found wynonna locked in a tiny crate during 115° weather in Phx

She was fully matted, no food, no water, just her and another little dog baking to death.

There wasn’t time to wait for Humane or Police to show up, assess, and potentially seize the dogs, or do nothing. Wynonna and the other little dog would not have survived another few days, let alone a few more hours.

The owner was cooperative and handed over both dogs after we chatted.

Wynonna came to us, very human friendly, but she was nervous of big dogs. Currently she has 5 little dog friends that she plays very well with. She loves all humans, but is still a little nervous around bigger dogs.

Being starved, and locked up, we aren’t surprised that she eats like it’s her last meal. We also aren’t surprised that she will guard her food if another dog tries to take it.

She’s incredibly small, and easy to manage. All the dogs eat on a schedule, and eat separately. There isn’t food laying around for anyone to graze on. Wynonna will require the same feeding routine with her future adopter.

She walks well on a leash, and would benefit from more exposure in safe environments to build her confidence. Like walking thru a big park, where she can see other humans and dogs, but isn’t required to socialize with them. In the beginning, just her and her human connecting and learning eachother will be the most valuable for her future success.

Wynonna loves to cuddle, however she is an extremely needy & Velcro dog. Meaning she will obsess over you if you don’t give her boundaries, or fill your one on one time with activities. Teaching her how to play with you, whether that be fetch, or tug, or hiding something that she has to sniff out to find, will be the best way to quickly build Wynonna’s confidence, while helping her learn that she doesn’t need to be glued to your pant leg to survive!

She is young, easy to love, quick to learn, and hungry for adventure!

Please email info@handoverrover.org for more information

Adoption fees range from $50 to $400 and must be paid when the adoption is finalized. Each adoption includes a 2-week trial period. If things don’t work out, the adoption fee is fully refundable. After the 2-week trial, while we are always happy to take back any of our dogs, the adoption fee will have already been invested in the care of other animals.
