My story began near Cuautepec Prison in Mexico, an area sadly known for people abandoning unwanted dogs and cats. I was rescued in April after being found on my own, likely discarded as part of an unwanted litter. The rescue team initially planned to include me in a TNR (trap, neuter, release) program, but thankfully a space opened up at La Casa del Mestizo, where I was able to stay safely until I found my chance to come to Canada.<br/><br/>I flew to Vancouver in October, where I thought I had found my forever home. Unfortunately, after a couple of weeks, it became clear that I wasn't the right fit for city life. Thankfully, I was welcomed into the incredible care of Taylor at Penny's Pals in Victoria, who has given me the time, patience, structure, and understanding I needed to truly decompress.<br/><br/>With consistent training, routine, and lots of love, I've absolutely blossomed. My confidence has grown tremendously, and I'm now ready to find the person who truly understands dogs like me.<br/><br/>Because I can be nervous around new people, I will likely need a few meet-and-greets before going home with my forever family. Building trust takes me a little time—but once you've earned it, you'll have a best friend for life.<br/><br/>CURRENT TEMPERAMENT:<br/><br/>My foster mom says I'm one of those dogs that quietly changes your life. Beneath my cautious exterior is an incredibly goofy, affectionate, hilarious little dog with a huge personality. I absolutely adore my people and would happily spend all day cuddled up beside them if given the chance. I'm playful, full of energy, incredibly food motivated, and LOVE having something to do.<br/><br/>I'm happiest when life has structure. Clear expectations, routine, and guidance help me thrive, and I've made enormous progress thanks to that consistency.<br/><br/>While I've come a long way, strangers are still scary for me. I may growl when I'm uncomfortable because that's how I communicate that I need space. My confidence continues to improve every day, but I will likely always be a dog who prefers to keep strangers at a distance. My ideal person will understand that this isn't something to "fix"—it's simply part of who I am—and they'll happily advocate for my space so I never feel the need to handle situations on my own.<br/><br/>On paper, I might sound like a lot... but the people who understand dogs like me will recognize just how incredibly special I am. I'm not the kind of dog who will love every person I meet—and that's okay! (but isn't required)<br/> No cats, small dogs or dogs who don't appreciate appropriate canine communication<br/> Ideally someone located in or near Victoria so I can continue attending my favourite structured daycare (which I love!! video), although this isn't required<br/><br/><br/>ENERGY LEVEL:<br/><br/>I am a high energy, young gal with lots of energy to burn. Daily physical exercise combined with mental enrichment is essential for keeping me happy and balanced.<br/><br/>Right now I'm thriving with pack hikes, structured daycare, training sessions, and adventures with my foster. Once my exercise needs are met, I'm more than happy to curl up beside you for a nap and soak up all the cuddles. I also have a serious obsession with chew toys!<br/><br/>GETS ALONG WITH:<br/><br/><br/> Dogs – Yes, I absolutely thrive around the right dogs. My foster describes me as dog-neutral, and I have beautiful canine communication skills. I currently live successfully with four dogs, love structured pack walks, and do wonderfully at structured daycare. I do show some prey drive, so a cat-free home would be best.<br/> Kids – Unknown. Because I can be fearful of strangers and need predictable interactions, we're looking for an adult-only home.<br/><br/><br/>PREY DRIVE - I do have some prey drive, however my recall and food drive is so good that my handler should be able to redirect my attention and prevent me from taking off after something. My adopter needs to be prepared and willing to train me through these behaviours, should they arise.<br/><br/>TRAINING:<br/><br/>I have worked incredibly hard with my foster and have learned so much!<br/><br/><br/> House Trained – Yes! I haven't had an accident in a very long time.<br/> Crate Trained – Absolutely. My crate is my safe space, and I settle beautifully inside. Because I may get into mischief if left loose, I should continue being crated when home alone. I also prefer that people don't reach into my crate while I'm inside, so my future family should respect my boundaries and body language.<br/> Leash Skills – Coming along wonderfully! I can be a little enthusiastic at the beginning of walks (I just get so excited!), but I settle nicely once I've gotten some energy out. I currently walk very well on a Starmark collar and continue to improve every day.<br/> <br/> Here is a video of me on leash in Mexico. <br/> Here is a video of my little-bit-chaotic leash walking at the start of a hike, hehe<br/> <br/> <br/> Recall – Excellent once I've built a relationship with my handler. I'm currently continuing my recall training with my foster.<br/> Place Command – Yes!<br/> Car Rides – I'm an absolute dream passenger. I'm happiest riding in a crate but also settle quietly if riding loose in the vehicle.<br/> <br/> Here is a video of me on my car rides in Mexico - check out my video. <br/> <br/> <br/><br/><br/>Please Note: WCP highly encourages adopters to do some research and training on their own before their dog arrives. <br/><br/>HEALTH NOTES:<br/><br/><br/> I am spayed, fully vaccinated, and microchipped. Before making my journey to Canada, I was tested for Heartworm, Distemper, Parvovirus, and Brucellosis, and all of my test results came back negative—yay!<br/> Since arriving in Canada, I've developed some environmental allergies that can cause big hives (video). To keep me comfortable, I take 4 daily antihistamine (totaling 40 mg), and if I have a flare-up, Benadryl helps settle everything back down. Thankfully, I respond very well to this treatment!<br/> Before coming to Canada, I had surgery to remove a fluid-filled swelling (hygroma) on one of my elbows. After arriving, I developed a similar swelling on my other elbow from lying on hard surfaces (you may even notice it in some of my videos!). The good news is that after spending lots of time lounging on cozy beds and blankets, it's been reabsorbing on its own and continues to improve. My future family should provide me with plenty of soft places to rest, as spending too much time on hard surfaces could cause it to return.<br/> I am currently covered by Fetch Pet Insurance for approximately $57/month. If my adopter would like to continue my coverage, the policy can be transferred into their name.<br/> NOTE: It is not uncommon for rescue dogs to require dental work/cleaning after they are adopted. West Coast Paws does not cover the costs of dental work and/or vet visits.
