Winston (Juvenille Diabetes)'s Story

Winston is an 8 month old juvenille diabetic dachshund puppy who weighs 9 pounds. We have had him since he was around 10 weeks old, and he is receiving excellent care. We will consider any state in the US and Canada. He will be an expensive dog over his lifetime, so his forever home should have experience with diabetes, and know that he won't be eligible for pet insurance.

He will need insulin every 12 hours for life, so only those willing and able to provide this medicine to him will be considered. In addition, we will require his adoptive home have an internist, and be willing to put a glucose monitor on him at least 4 times a year, to ensure he is still getting the right quantity of insulin. He will also need a specialist ophthalmologist visit once a year, to keep him on eye drops to control his eye pressure. He does have a good portion of his vision, and his cataracts are actually breaking down as his diabetes becomes controlled.

He will be neutered when he is ten months old, and then be ready for adoption in March of 2026.

He is a typical happy, silly puppy who loves playing with other dogs and adores his humans! We are working on potty training as we started with pads when he arrived and now he is getting used to outside, also.

To be considered for Winston, please apply on our website:

portlanddachshundrescue.org/adoptionform

Portland Dachshund Rescue, Inc.'s Adoption Policy
OUR CRITERIA There's nothing better than a successful match. We like to explain the process of finding the right rescue dog as being similar to online dating: You will want to check our site often to see who is new, read each bio and reach out if you think they might have found someone special. Our adoption team is highly skilled at helping you find a dog with the right personality that will fit your family and lifestyle. Occasionally, we receive multiple promising applications for a dog and ultimately match the dog with the home where we think they will do best. We are committed to helping you find a dog even if you don't "match" on your first attempt. We would love nothing more than to help you find the forever dog of your dreams. Although we like to tailor each match, we do have some basic criteria we look with respect to adoptive homes: *Homes should be non-smoking *Have a securely fenced yard *Ability to commit to yearly dentals and shots for the pet *Willingness to purchase ramps and pet stairs to safeguard the dog's back
