Winn Dixie's Story
Adorable and affectionate Winn Dixie is an approximately 1.5 year-old Great Pyrenees/Lab mix (all best guess!). She currently weighs about 40 pounds, but is underweight and working to get back to a healthy adult weight. She may have applications in progress but is currently available.

We suspect that Winn Dixie did not have the easiest life before getting rescued, but in response all she wants is love and to make up for lost affection now. Brought into a very busy and crowded shelter in West Virginia, she was terrified of shelter life and was not doing well in that environment, when she came to a veterinary medical student at Ohio State for her spay. She decided she simply couldn't let Winn go back to that shelter and offered to foster her with Stop the Suffering. After some love and care and being in a stable environment, Winn is all loving and energetic pup! She is just about house trained, sleeps through the night and is crate trained (still requires supervision when uncrated) and is great with other dogs, cats (even mean ones!) and small children. We think she would be a wonderful family dog, but to be clear, she wants to be a full fledged member of the family - cuddling on your lap, snuggling with you on the couch, being tucked in with you in bed at night and just being petted and loved in generall. And she gives love too - she'll sneak in a nose bump or a kiss just about anyway or anywhere she can get it - your arm, your leg, your elbow. Her foster strongly suspects that she was deprived of human affection and now just revels in receiving it.

Based on how underweight she was, and the way she will scarf down food, we do believe food was very scarce and life was very inconsistent in her previous life. In a more stable environment with regular meals, she is settling in - though she may need slower and more structured time with other dogs before being willing to share high value toys or be comfortable around them with food. We do believe having another playful dog in her forever home will help her continue to learn the ropes of being a loved dog and while not required, we definitely recommend a fenced in yard as she loves, loves, loves to romp and play and has lots of young pup energy for it.

Adoption fee is $375 and includes spay/neuter, microchip, fecal/deworming, vaccines and prevention up to date. Ohio residents only.

STS is a foster-based and volunteer-run rescue. We do not have a physical location or set hours for you to meet dogs, and it does take time to answer each inquiry. All dogs are in foster homes and once an application is approved and a home visit is completed you will be able to schedule meet and greets with available dogs. We encourage interested individuals to get approved prior to searching as it helps expedite the process. A Petfinder inquiry is not a substitute for an application.
