Wilma's Story

Wilma: The Snore Heard ’Round the Neighborhood

Meet Wilma. She is 54 pounds of English Bulldog, approximately six years old, and living proof that you should never judge a bulldog by her nap schedule.

When Wilma first arrived, we thought we had ourselves a lovely little snooze enthusiast. A mellow gal. A professional lounger. A retired grandmother in a bulldog suit.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

As Wilma has gotten comfortable, she has revealed her true identity: WILMA IS A WILD CHILD.

Sure, she still enjoys a good nap. And yes, she can snore with the power and conviction of a middle-aged man who has fallen asleep on the couch three pieces of pie deep. But then she wakes up. And suddenly there is a 54-pound bulldog GOING ABSOLUTELY FERAL WITH JOY.

Wilma loves to run with her people and her dog friends. She loves to pounce. She loves toys. She loves rolling around in the dirt like she has a very important appointment with the landscaping. And apparently, she has developed her own signature athletic event: The Wilma Hill Roll.

She will run down a hill, dramatically flop onto her side, and proceed to roll the rest of the way down. Because walking down a hill is apparently for amateurs.

She also enjoys the occasional sprint/slide combination, followed by dropping herself into the grass or dirt, pausing for a moment as though contemplating the meaning of life, and then rolling around enthusiastically.

Honestly, we have no idea what sport she's training for, but she's clearly going to the Olympics.

Wilma doesn't need miles and miles of exercise, but make no mistake: this girl is NOT a couch potato. She loves having fun, playing with her friends, exploring, and generally making excellent decisions that include getting as filthy as possible.

And then, when she's finished being an athlete? She naps. And snores. GOOD LORD, DOES SHE SNORE. Wilma can snore while sleeping. She can snore while awake. At this point, we're pretty sure she could snore while operating heavy machinery.

Hrrrrrrrrrrr... Snort. Wheeeeeze. HHRRRRRRRRRRRR.

It is less "dog sleeping" and more "someone started a lawn mower in the next room." And somehow, it is ridiculously adorable.

Wilma also has a spectacular little underbite that gives her a permanent expression somewhere between "I love you very much." and "I have reviewed your proposal and respectfully declined."

She came to us after being surrendered to a shelter in Alabama when her family could no longer care for her. She arrived with untreated chronic dry eye that has affected her vision. She is now receiving the care she needs in Wisconsin and will most likely need prescription eye drops three times a day for the rest of her life.

Wilma also has some arthritis, is prone to yeast issues, and previously had a bladder stone removed.

She has a heart murmur that has been evaluated by a veterinarian. Thankfully, it does not currently affect her day-to-day life, but it will need to be monitored throughout her lifetime.

Because Wilma's vision isn't perfect, she can occasionally be startled by loud or unexpected noises. When that happens, she may execute what can only be described as a three-foot emergency bulldog relocation before looking to her people for reassurance. So while she is absolutely capable of unleashing her inner chaos goblin, she will do best in a calm, secure home where she knows her people have her back.

And here's where Wilma gets especially cute:

She LOVES other dogs. She enjoys having a canine entourage and is happiest when she has furry friends around to walk, play and generally get into harmless trouble with. She doesn't necessarily need to be the leader. She's more like the fun middle-aged aunt of the group who says, "Come on, kids, let's go!" and then immediately rolls down a hill.

Wilma would love a home with friendly dogs who enjoy playtime but also understand the importance of a good nap afterward. Her ideal day probably looks something like this:

Wake up.
Snore.
Go for a walk.
Run like a maniac.
Pounce on a dog friend.
Find a toy.
Roll in dirt.
Roll in more dirt.
Take a nap.
Snore aggressively.
Repeat.

She's housebroken, affectionate, funny, wonderfully stubborn, incredibly lovable and just the right amount of ridiculous.

Her perfect home includes:

• A calm, secure environment
• Friendly canine siblings
• People who enjoy a dog with a sense of humor
• Someone committed to her three-times-daily eye drops
• Continued veterinary monitoring of her heart murmur
• Toys
• Cozy blankets
• Some room to run and play
• A willingness to accept that dirt is apparently a lifestyle choice
• A fan for bedtime
• And absolutely NO JUDGMENT about the snoring

Wilma isn't looking for a marathon-running, twelve-hours-a-day-adventure lifestyle. She wants a family, some fun, some friends, a few good walks, toys, a comfortable place to land—and the freedom to occasionally transform herself into a 54-pound furry bowling ball rolling down a hill.

She will give you affection. She will give you companionship. She will give you entertainment. She will give you the occasional unexpected bulldog zoomie.

And at bedtime? She will give you the soundtrack.

So if you've been searching for an adorable, underbite-equipped, dirt-rolling, toy-loving, dog-friendly English Bulldog who can go from "peaceful grandmother" to "WHEEEEEEEE!" in approximately 2.7 seconds...

Congratulations. You found Wilma.
