Wiley's Story

About Wiley
Status: Available
Breed: Border Collie
Gender: Neutered Male
DOB: 12/17/2021
LOCATION: Montvale, VA
WEIGHT: 45lbs
COAT: Rough Coat
COLOR: Black and White
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Companion

Meet Wiley!

Wiley has been one of my easiest fosters, but will need an appropriate environment and a patient adopter to help him continue to gain confidence. We have very little information about his previous life; we only know that he came from a household with a senior couple and the male caretaker passed. He was extremely shut down when picked up from the shelter – to the extreme of pancaking on the floor, in a corner trying to become invisible. Even though he was petrified, he never acted aggressive. He just froze in place. He had no joy, and only wanted to be invisible.

Wiley has come a long way in his two months of being in foster, and now has joy in his life! Although mostly calm, he will wag his tail and try to play with the other dogs in a very awkward manner. He shows some signs that he may eventually want to play with toys. He is also beginning some recall training now that he seems comfortable in his surroundings.

Wiley will do best in a calm environment (probably no children or frequent visitors) with a patient owner who is willing to let him come into his own and doesn't push him to engage. At this time, he prefers not to 'meet' people and keeps his distance. He is a thinker and wants to observe before acting. It takes a lot for him to trust. His new home will NOT use an e-fence or any type of e-collar because he shows signs of past abuse with a shock collar. He is also a strong flight risk (although that may change as he learns to trust you and his environment) so a secure fence is required or a commitment to ALWAYS take him outside on a leash or long line. It is relaxing to walk him although occasionally he wants to stop for a good sniff (which I am allowing to help grow his confidence).

Wiley's house manners are impeccable! He mostly ignores the cats, but did try chasing/playing with them at first. I think he would be happier with a canine friend or two. (He previously lived in a house with 4 other dogs, and currently has 3 foster siblings). He does follow me into the bathroom and will sit outside a closed bedroom door if I am inside.

At this point, he is not a dog that would like to go to classes or meet-ups where he is required to interact with people. He seems to enjoy hiking – always on a leash or long line – but shies away if anyone tries to say hello. He has been fine riding in the rear of our truck cab, and will get into a crate in the car if lifted. He has drooled excessively when crated in the car. Note: he is very comfortable going into his crate in the house.

Wiley is hoping for a new partner with a quiet life and calm personality who is willing to be patient to allow him to figure out – on his own time schedule - what and who he can trust and gently lead him to a more joyful life. His adopter must also be willing to brush his luxurious coat – which he tends to enjoy in short sessions. Brushing could be a wonderful bonding opportunity!

If you are the perfect forever home for Wiley, please fill out an application and contact his foster parents at jklrsn@gmail.com. BRBCR’s approval process includes phone interviews, reference checks, and a home visit prior to meeting a foster dog. Approved applicants must meet at the foster dog’s location. Every adoption begins with a 2-week trial period.

Wiley’s adoption fee is $350.

Thank you for considering a rescue dog!

Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue's Adoption Policy
BRBCR's adoption process requires that each of the following steps are successfully completed before meeting one of our foster dogs. The approval process typically takes 1 - 2 weeks. 1. Contact the foster parent of the dog that you are interested in to request an adoption application. 2. Fill out an adoption application on our website OR email a completed adoption application to brbcrdogs@gmail.com. 3. A BRBCR volunteer will conduct a phone interview with the applicant and the applicant's veterinarian and personal references. 4. A BRBCR volunteer will conduct a home visit with the applicant. Upon approval, the foster parent will set up a Meet and Greet for the applicant. If the Meet and Greet is successful, then the applicant will be able to take the BRBCR dog home for a 2-week trial period. If the trial period is successful, the adoption becomes official.
