Whitney's Story

Meet Whitney — Two Years of Waiting. A Lifetime of Love Ahead!

Imagine spending almost your entire life in a shelter, never knowing what it's like to have a family of your own.

That's Whitney's story.

Whitney arrived at the Chillicothe Animal Shelter in August 2024, when she was just a puppy. And we're discovering what a wonderful girl she is!

Whitney LOVES other dogs! She's been having a fantastic time at daycare, where she gets to play, socialize, and enjoy the company of her canine friends.

She's also been on numerous Doggy Day Out adventures, giving her opportunities to explore new places, experience different environments, and discover all the little things most family dogs take for granted.

Because Whitney spent so much of her life in a shelter, she can be a little shy when meeting new people or encountering unfamiliar situations. But that doesn't mean she doesn't want to connect. She simply needs a little time to feel comfortable and understand that the world is a safe, wonderful place.

And she's already making progress!

We think Whitney would do especially well with a patient, loving family that understands the importance of allowing a dog to adjust at her own pace. A home with another friendly, confident dog could be a wonderful fit, giving her a playmate and helping her continue building confidence.

Whitney doesn't need someone to feel sorry for her.

She needs someone to believe in her.

Someone who will celebrate the little victories.

Someone who understands that confidence grows through patience, consistency, and positive experiences.

Someone who will show her that life is about so much more than the four walls of a kennel.

After spending two years and two months waiting, Whitney is finally getting to experience the world.

Now she just needs one more thing.

A family to experience it with.

If you have a little patience, a lot of love, and room in your heart for a sweet, dog-friendly girl who's discovering life one adventure at a time, Whitney may be the perfect companion for you.

Let's make sure the rest of Whitney's life is filled with everything she missed during her first two years.

Basics: She is a spayed female guessed to be around 3 yrs old and she weighs close to 40lbs. She is currently in a foster home in Johnson County, KS

Adoption Process:
- Please fill out our adoption application: https://www.dayofthedogs.org/adoption-application

- One of our team members will get back to you via phone.
- Our dogs can be seen by appointment only. Please do not contact us until you are prepared to adopt. NOTE: We are very good about updating the pet's profiles once adopted. So no need to write us to ask "Is he/she still available?" If the post is up, the dog is still available.

About Day of the Dogs
Day of the Dogs is a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to helping shelter and rescue dogs find safety, families, and second chances.
Founded in 2015 by a Kansas City native, Day of the Dogs began after Pam moved to Houston, Texas and witnessed firsthand the devastating shelter overcrowding crisis facing southern communities, where some shelters have only days to find an outcome for homeless pets.
Today, Day of the Dogs coordinates life-saving transports from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other southern areas to rescue partners, shelters, fosters, and adopters in Northwest Indiana/Chicagoland and the Kansas City region — communities where adoption demand can help create better outcomes for pets in need. We also focus on long stay dogs in the Greater Kansas City and surrounding rural areas to help those pets get out of kennels and into homes.
We also facilitate direct adoptions through our foster networks in both Kansas City and Northwest Indiana and partner with shelters and rescue organizations across Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, and Indiana to save more lives together.
Because every open foster home creates another opportunity to save a dog, we are always looking for foster families to join our mission.
Day of the Dogs operates entirely on donations. Every transport, veterinary appointment, supply purchase, and life saved is possible because of supporters who believe every dog deserves a chance.
Donate or learn more: www.dayofthedogs.org
