Whisper's Story
A059504 Whisper; spayed female Queensland Heeler/Pit Bull mix; est. 2 years; 42.1 pounds

Contact : Calaveras County Animal Services (209)754-6509
or animal@calaverascounty.gov

Whisper's breed has been a topic of discussion around the shelter. Our guess of Queensland Heeler/Pit Bull mix may be correct, incorrect, or only part of the story. Without genetic testing, we can only surmise her actual heritage, but isn't she interesting looking? Her pictures here don't show it, but her tail is generally held in a saucy Akita-like curl over her back. Her coat is short and luxurious, very soft to stroke (and she loves that, yes, please do more of that, thank you!), and a pretty combo of silver-grey with dark tips and white patches on her chest. Her coat's contrast with her deep brown eyes is quite striking.

As we get to know Whisper, we are noticing that she is a fairly sensitive dog, frightened at times by the shelter environment and sometimes startling at loud sounds. We certainly can't fault her for reacting to the shelter's noise and chaos. She is much, much happier once she gets out on her morning walkies, seeming to relish the peace and quiet outdoors.

Her leash manners are generally nice, though she'd benefit from a little more training in that area, especially recall. She does like to stick close to her person, leaning in for comfort and to savor lots of pets. Our guess is that she'll bond deeply with and want to please her adopters once she settles into her new home.

Whisper isn't much of a ball player, but does seem to enjoy water, which is fun for us and her. She doesn't, however, enjoy other female dogs, and not all male dogs, either. This may be from natural dominance in her personality, or simply her anxiety about her incarceration; it's possible that once she finds herself in her new home she'll relax and form happy relationships with a wider variety of dogs. It's also possible that she's just picky about her friends and will thrive best in a quiet, calm home.

Whisper has been spayed so she is ready to go home with you.

She keeps her kennel mostly tidy, so she may be easy to housetrain, though of course we can't make promises. We do not have info on her attitude toward cats at this time. As always, a meet-and-greet is required if you have other dogs at home.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Thank you for reading and ?
