Whiskey's Story
Whiskey is a 6-y.o. neutered sable male, 42 pounds, looking for his forever home. He was surrendered due to his reactive behaviors and a bite that occurred when he was involved in a dog fight and his owner tried to break it up. He’s currently in foster care and is doing very well. He’s affectionate, housetrained, walks well on leash, plays fetch, and gets along well with people and dogs. He’s up to date with vaccinations. Please note that in the photos he's been shaved (not recommended for Shelties).

Here’s what his foster mom says about him:

He’s doing great! He does seem to be nervous around noises (vacuuming, door bell rings, loud cars, etc.) but is easily redirected with treats. We met my brother’s dog this weekend and they got along great! He is an absolute love bug that enjoys snuggling up on the couch with us! He’ll lay his head right in your lap —it’s the cutest thing!

I think Whiskey would thrive in a home where his people can focus on his training needs. He doesn't require very much exercise (we typically do two shorter walks each day). We've currently been working on some counter-conditioning and desensitization around loud noises on walks and he seems to be responding very well. He's a smart boy! So far, he's been reactive to most noises on walks and in the home: cars, buses, skateboards, construction, and dogs (especially if they bark first). In the home, noises that scare him are things like blenders, hair dryers, shredders, and spraying hairspray. That said, we've been timing our walks with his normal feeding schedule and he's been very easy to redirect with just his usual kibble! I also always have some kibble near me in the house so I can distract him if any noises in the house are worrying him.

Whiskey would benefit from a quiet home with few distractions. Another calm canine would be welcome. Consistent training, regular routines, and lots of exercise need to be priorities. He’s currently on medication to help with his reactivity, but over time we’re hoping it won’t be needed.

If you’re interested in Whiskey, please contact tgarycool@gmail.com, the email address for the adoption coordinator for NorCal Sheltie Rescue.
