Waylon's Story

Meet Waylon: The Gentle English Setter

Background & Personality

Waylon is a 3.5-year-old orange and white English Setter from Olathe, KS. After a rough start—being released by a hunt trainer because he's gun shy—Waylon is learning that people can be kind. He's slow to trust, but with patience and love, he's blossoming into a loyal companion. Each day, his walls come down a little more, and he's showing just how sweet and devoted he can be.

Activity Level

By day, Waylon is a professional couch potato, happy to relax and nap. But when the workday ends, he's ready for a walk and a bit of fun. If he gets bored, he'll entertain himself by tossing toys around—he's got a playful streak that's sure to make you smile.

Social Skills

Waylon loves meeting other dogs and is a social butterfly with his canine friends. He's more reserved with new people, especially adults, but is surprisingly comfortable with children—he'll let a small child pet him before an adult. With time and gentle introductions, he warms up to new faces.

Home & Fence Requirements

A physical fence is a must for Waylon's safety and comfort. He's looking for a home where he can feel secure and have space to play.

Training & House Manners

Waylon is making great progress with basic commands and is very treat-motivated, which makes training fun and rewarding. He's housebroken, but his signals are subtle—a gentle nudge or quiet wait by the door means he needs to go out. He's also learning not to chew things that aren't his, so supervision is helpful.

Crate & Leash Training

His kennel is both a safe haven and sometimes a source of anxiety. He sleeps there at night with the door open and is learning that his people always come back. Waylon is still learning the ropes and isn't quite a running buddy, but with a little patience and training, he could be your future jogging partner! At the start of each walk, he's full of excitement and may pull a bit, but he quickly settles into a relaxed, almost loose-leash pace. Unlike most dogs, Waylon isn't obsessed with sniffing every blade of grass—he's much more interested in the sights around him, making every stroll a visual adventure.

Health & Special Needs

Waylon is neutered, fully vaccinated, and healthy, with only a slight heart murmur that just needs to be monitored if he ever needs anesthesia again. He has no known allergies or special needs, but he does have some anxiety, especially around new situations.

Fun Facts & Foster Life

Waylon's favorite discovery? Squeaky toys! He'll stand in the middle of the room squeaking away, or toss a tennis ball across the yard for a solo game of fetch. In his foster home, he loves playing with other dogs but would also do well as an only pet. He's ready for a forever family who will give him the patience, love, and gentle encouragement he deserves.
