Walter's Story

Walter showed up at a acreage south of Meadow Lake, and never claimed by owners. We know he was owned by someone as he was neutered and not scared of humans. He is a very gentle, kind dog. He does prefer to be outside. A volunteer had taken him home for a play date with her dog and he was hesitant to go into the house. Once inside, he checked out the main floor but settled on her dogs bed in the living room. He smelt the cats in the house but didn't chase or bother them. He was friendly with the volunteers dog, but didn't want to play with the young guy. Walter seems to like another dog around but not to be rambunctious with. He doesn't bark at the other dogs at the shelter. Come to think of it, we've rarely heard him even make a noise. If he does, it is when he's outside and more of high pitched squeak. He does seem to have hip dysplasia (undiagnosed but he sits quite oddly). It doesn't seem to bother him. He likes to go for walks and walks good on a leash. Walter would do well in a quiet home with lots of love. He paws at your for pets. He would prefer to spend majority of his time outdoors but to come in somewhere warm to sleep and eat.

Regular adoption fee for dogs is $300; if the dog is too young for spay/neuter prior to adoption then a $300 post dated spay/neuter deposit cheque (OR PAD form) is also required - we don't cash this cheque but hold it until cheque date and proof of S/N surgery provided by the date on the cheque - typically when the pup is 6 months of age. Occasionally we adopt out particular animals at fundraising prices to help offset our vet bills, each fundraiser dog will be posted as such with the adoption fee noted. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter and rabies ONLY if surgery is done with our Meadow Lake vet; otherwise adopters are responsible to pay those fees at their own vets.

Use our online application form found at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Q1Xw1ArXT3owIBuG8O25Ioqmx1_NWGgi9eXIhOO_0dg/edit?pli=1

Also Join us online at - www.facebook.com/mldhs
We upload our pet's video clips to www.youtube.com/mldhs1 - search there by name of the animal that interests you; you may often find more than one clip.

Meadow Lake & District Humane Society's Adoption Policy
MLDHS Adoption Guidelines PLEASE READ BEFORE FILLING OUT THE APPLICATION You must be at least 21 years old to adopt. PLEASE NOTE: We have, on occasion, had technical issues and have not always received adoption applications. If you fill out an application please follow up with an email to mldhs@sasktel.net to let us know you sent one in. You must be able to make a LONG term commitment to an animal - both emotional and financial. We do not adopt pets as gifts. You may pay for an animal for someone else but they must be involved in the adoption process and make the application themselves. For dogs: you must have a fenced in yard or dog pen if you live within town/city limits. All current pets must be spayed or neutered and go for regular vet care. For families with children under 5: we will not adopt certain breeds or particular dogs to you. Cats cannot be declawed after adoption. Dogs cannot have ears or tails docked after adoption. We know the personalities of each of the animals that we have in rescue. We understand what the ideal home and environment is for each of them and will make our decisions based on that information. Board policy is to not adopt to anyone living in communities where dog culls (shooting) is the method of animal control. We reserve the right to deny any application without a reason being provided. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE with any of these terms please do not apply for one of our pets. Our adoption process can sometimes take up to 7 -10 days. Please be patient as our volunteers have regular jobs and their own commitments. ADOPTION FEES: For Dogs that are altered, up to date on shots, wormed and started on preventatives- adoption fee is $300.00. For Pups that are too young to be altered - adoption fee is $300 plus a separate $300 spay/neuter deposit cheque. For Cats that are altered, up to date on shots, and dewormed the adoption fee is $80.00. For Kittens that are too young to be altered but are up to date on shots and wormed the adoption fee is $100.00 plus a separate $100 spay/neuter deposit cheque. All animals for adoption through MLDHS will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption if they are old enough. If the animal is too young for altering at time of adoption, they must be spayed/neutered by an agreed upon date and a post dated spay/neuter deposit cheque or pre-authorized debit form left with MLDHS. The cost of this procedure to the society is included in the adoption fee ONLY if done at our local MLDHS vet. You may use your own vet but surgery and rabies cost vaccine are then the adopter's responsibility and will not be reimbursed by MLDHS. Proof of surgery completed by the S/N date noted is to be provided to MLDHS and at that time S/N deposits will be destroyed. Vaccinations: Animals should have received their first shots while at MLDHS and if adults, Rabies Vaccination given at time of altering. If they have not received their booster before adoption, the adopter is responsible for ensuring that they receive it, at adopter's expense. A rabies immunization, if not received by time of adoption, is also the responsibility of adopter unless a puppy is being altered at our local vet, at which time they would receive the rabies at the altering appointment. As well, all dogs and puppies will be given microchips - this cost is also included in our adoption fees. Cats can be supplied with Microchip for insertion for an extra fee of $20.00 if requested.
