Uku might be the velcro dog you've been dreaming of.

Uku is an 11.5-year-old purebred red dachshund with a gorgeous long coat that has a touch of wire texture. He weighs 16 lbs and is the definition of a sweet senior boy. He came to Little Paws after displaying food aggression with a new dog in his previous home and unfortunately biting a toddler on the belly during a food-related incident.

This lovebug adores showing off his belly for rubs and has the most endearing snore. He's incredibly affectionate with his people and just wants to be your constant companion.

Environment

Uku has a medium activity level and loves his daily walks and playtime. He's fantastic on the leash and genuinely enjoys his walking adventures. A fenced yard would be nice for him but isn't essential if you're committed to regular walks.

The good news: Uku is fully potty trained! His previous owners used belly bands, but his foster family stopped using them (except at nighttime) and he hasn't had any accidents. He's reliable and consistent with his house training.

Uku hates his crate and thrives on being close to his people. He has separation anxiety and doesn't do well being left alone for long periods. When left by himself, he barks and whines, so he needs a home without shared walls. He would do wonderfully in a home where someone is around most of the time, or where he has another calm dog companion to help ease his anxiety when you need to step out.

Uku is excited about car rides! He does great in the car, whether he's in a crate or on someone's lap (just not the driver's), and can handle long distances without any issues.

Pets & People

Uku is sweet and loving with adults and has shown no aggression toward his foster family, even around food. However, due to his history of biting a toddler during a food-related incident, he should not be placed in a home with young children. He's extremely food motivated and will stare and beg relentlessly if he thinks you have food. Young children with snacks in their hands could trigger his food drive, so a home with only adults or older children who understand boundaries around food is essential.

With strangers, Uku is a gem! He was wonderful with all three transporters who helped bring him to his foster home, did great at the vet, and is friendly with neighbors. Once he knows you're not a threat, he's all about the love.

Uku does well with other dogs and doesn't mind having a canine companion around. He likes to be near his foster sister but doesn't show much interest in playing—he's more of a low-key, parallel friend. Another calm dog in the home would actually benefit him by helping reduce his separation anxiety.

Now, about food: Uku is VERY food motivated. He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’ for treats and understands he gets a reward after going potty. When giving him treats, offer them in your palm and remind him to "be easy." He eats very quickly and has food aggression, so he must be fed separately from other animals. He will steal food or treats from other pets if given the chance. In his foster home, he hasn't shown any aggression toward people around food, but his resource guarding with other animals is something his new family needs to manage carefully.

Location

Uku is available for adoption from Hendersonville, NC.
